I asked Luca Turin on Substack which of the four fougères he praised he would choose today. He replied: ‘But… I don’t have to choose’. I laughed, rightly so. I mentioned I’d found a bottle of the 2014 reissue of Or Black. Turin, speaking of the original 1981 version, said it’s the driest and darkest perfume he’s ever smelled, even more so than Djedi. Since I’ve never tried the original, I suspect this reformulated version is less dark. It opens with aniseed violet, green and creamy, slightly unctuous and medicinal. Resinous rosemary and sharp artemisia mixed with lavender give a Barbasol-style shaving cream vibe. As it dries, the violet becomes musky and leather emerges. It’s a dark fougère with chypre touches, with a subtle petrol scent reminiscent of Fahrenheit. The greenness doesn’t turn smoky like Turin’s Earl Grey but stays fresh yet bitter. I absolutely love this juice; I always discover something new. Fantastic.
Too much. It’s not herbal; it’s like plunging your vein into a cauldron of fennel and boiled plastics steeped in poison. This new Or Black is the kind of vintage scent I hate, marinated in gummy vapours, like sticking your head in a pot where someone is stewing all the world’s misfortunes. Curiously, it has nothing to do with the classic Or Black by Sieuzac, a hidden gem, delicate and fierce, with wonderful leathery and herbal notes. This is something else: a rough, milky chop of herbs and turpentines, not the pretty or sensual kind, but herbs boiled by the tonne. The artemisia note is unbearable, meaty, raw, gummy like a condom. There’s a sticky, unpleasant citrus. The violet kills me; I only smell lettuce-like notes of rubber and green gum. I’m surprised they don’t list oakmoss, which is noticeable. The final trail is a patchouli that smells like celery. Unbearable. I tested it at work and had to wash my hands; even while typing on the computer, waves of tarred milk, rotten and cracked rubber made me ill. The potency is such that I can’t tell if the packaging is good or bad. PD I: Van Cleef pour Homme and Yatagan by Caron are treats for very particular palates, like a relative who eats raw anchovies. I don’t know anyone who does it unless they truly enjoy it. PD II: The notes on the website don’t match. I smell lots of oakmoss and it’s not listed; they list violet and I can’t detect it. Today Pascal Morabito doesn’t say much; in the seventies they were avant-garde jewels with encapsulated diamonds, but time has devoured them and current quality is low.
I like it. At first, I perceive a subtle bergamot, a vegetal touch that gives cleanliness and lavender. Over time, the lavender takes the lead alongside a woody note. In the end, there’s a musky woody note. I’ve liked it quite a lot. In the middle phase, it becomes very floral with the lavender, but, unlike others where it bores me, here it’s very well balanced. It’s quite versatile: for autumn, winter and spring, for daytime. Long-lasting longevity and moderate sillage.
