On paper and on skin, the house shines: very indie, top-tier materials, and a genuine ambergris. The opening is the best part, with defined and lively notes; while the ambergris provides support, for me the champaca is the star. James Barry uses an exquisite quality, just like in Fiona: floral, creamy, with a bitter touch, but he adds all the power of ambergris alongside notes that contribute nothing to the whole. It sounds like the work of a novice perfumer who has first-rate ingredients but doesn’t know how to create something unique; hence why he launched 17 fragrances in a year (ideas from several years, but the collection all at once). Does the champaca smell good? Yes, spectacular, but the blend says nothing, plus it performs poorly, projects little, and falls apart quickly. The dense ambergris (which isn’t one of the best I’ve smelled) lasts hours but without brilliance. At these prices, one expects more than three quality ingredients thrown into a blender to see if they don’t clash. Scent 4.9, Projection 6, Longevity 3, Originality 8.3. Price: $229 (30ml). Recommended: No.
