In the autumn of 2000, an American lawyer, always in a suit and leather shoes, lived alone west of a Kentucky field. Wealthy yet taciturn, his brusque manner stemmed from his isolation, living miles from neighbours. All he had was a giant tree and desolate land; by night, he listened only to music on his Grundig radio. Whenever he sat down, he played Johnny Cash’s ‘Folsom Prison’, holding a fine cigar in his hand. It was his routine: smoke a good cigar and take a sip of whisky each night, as if trapped in a loop. The same image repeated day after day. Over time, he neglected his home; rats, foxes, and any animal that wished came in, yet they also came to see the man who watched the clock hands and never smiled. Time passed, and the memory’s image grew blurred, until one day the man left this world seated with the cigar in hand, the whisky glass nearly empty, and animals atop the table, observing that atrocious scene. All in his typical suit with the radio on. The scent and memories of that moment remained trapped in my mind. The bottle’s image is part of this fictional story; when I tried it, I was instantly transported to that imaginary yet so real scene in my mind, making it hard not to write it. This perfume has such a realistic olfactory experience that I don’t know if in another life I was that person sitting in the chair listening to ‘Folsom Prison’, with a glass of whisky and smoking the cigar until waking in another dimension.
