Upcycled Mandarin by Les Liquides Imaginaires is an aromatic citrus creation designed for men and women. Launched in 2025, this fragrance is a recent work by perfumers Carol Belli and Kosuke Minakata. Its opening unfolds the freshness of Italian mandarin and green mandarin, accompanied by the zing of pink pepper, the citrus of Italian lemon, and the exotic touch of cardamom. The heart of the composition reveals a floral and fruity harmony with lavender, blackberry, mahonia, and the delicate orange blossom. Finally, the base notes settle into a warm and woody foundation formed by periwinkle, cedar, heliotrope, amber, Haitian vetiver, almond, benzoin, and vanillin.

I tested it in Milan recently, straight out of the oven. The opening is glorious—pure summer with a craving for linen and sunglasses—but after a realistic burst of mandarin, it fades and the dry-down arrives. The mandarin remains, yet it smells much less niche and takes on very typical designer notes. I was told the name comes from an upcycled technique used to extract the oil, which improves longevity and prevents it from vanishing so quickly. It’s a pity such an apothegmatic opening ends up being a perfume that, while good, doesn’t stand out or possess that niche essence, extreme refinement, or celestial scent; it simply smells nice, but it’s designer. I think the price is exorbitant (€190). Even if both this and the others smell good, for me they don’t pass, unless in a fit of madness they drop the price to €120 😃🍊
