For the first three hours, black pepper dominates, with a slight kick. From the outset, it smells like a gourmand vanilla with a fleeting hint of ylang-ylang. Afterwards, I believe it’s the tonka attempting to evoke almond milk, though for me, it’s not very noticeable. Around the three-hour mark, it undergoes a metamorphosis and becomes remarkably similar to Alambra. While they claim the dry-down is vanilla absolute and vetiver, to me it carries a strong Alambra vibe, particularly that dusted cocoa (not chocolate) note. The performance is good. At the official price, Goutal should have launched this to the Arab market sooner—that is, to the wealthy Moor. At a discounted price, however, it is well worth it.
It’s a shy vanilla that adds nothing if you already own several perfumes with that note. Neither fish nor fiddle, as I thought… and a real rage for me! It’s not a bomb like Perris’s Tahiti Vanilla, but Chernelle doesn’t aim to be one. The opening is spicy, almost making me sneeze, and the vanilla takes its time to emerge. First comes a creamy, slightly embarrassing ylang with tonka that gives it an amber twist. Then arrives its gourmand vanilla: pastry-like, refined, clean, and so warm it smells like a freshly baked muffin. If you’re saturated with vanilla, it won’t blow your mind, but for a party or formal event, it’s a wonder with excellent longevity and a noticeable trail. The pepper is key to its development; without it, it would be boring. I love it and am becoming addicted, but the price isn’t justified. At half price (€200), I would have bought it already.
