Black Granit by Pascal Morabito is neither granite nor black, nor anything remotely close; it is another perfume where the name is merely part of the confusion ceremony. The description claims it belongs to an Olfactive Family, but by Odin, I have no idea what that means, as everything smells olfactive. Sometimes I even use ‘Aromatic’ for the perfumes I review, though I’m equally unsure what that category implies, since everything seems aromatic. I suspect when Fragantica refers to Olfactive or Aromatic Families, they are talking about generic perfumes that fail to meet the requirements for proper perfumery classification, and that is precisely the fault of BLACK GRANIT. Being generic is neither good nor bad, simply generic, with its own virtues and flaws. The scent is linear and unpretentious: a herbal-floral blend, slightly woody, yet coated in a lightness, perhaps excessive. It smells a little bit of everything and a whole lot of nothing in particular. I detect notes of bergamot, calendula, apple, and above all, a very soft white musk that gives it a faintly soapy air, with a touch of wild flower that could be lavender or chamomile. It is a refreshing cologne, suitable for daily hygiene, and nothing more. It stands out for nothing special, nor is it disastrous; it sits right in that middle ground of ‘the unnoticed’. Its performance is scant.
This is another semi-unknown house offering decent perfumes at tempting prices. If you are bored with the launches from famous houses that sometimes fail to live up to their history, discovering something new like this Black Granit could prove interesting. It reveals itself as a sweet praline (chocolate) initially dark and spicy, with gourmand touches. Later, it turns into a woody citrus, with medium-level longevity and sillage. It is undoubtedly a pleasant and modern fragrance that sparks an interest to try other creations from this designer.
