Descripción

Bois Doré by Van Cleef & Arpels is an oriental woody fragrance for men and women. This composition, created by perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin and launched in 2017, unfolds a scent pyramid where the top notes combine spicy black pepper with a mineral touch. The heart reveals a warm blend of vanilla, almond, tobacco and cedar, while the base settles on tonka bean, teakwood and musk.

  • I also perceive tonka in the opening, but in this composition it seems nowhere near as extremely sweet or sticky as in another designer perfume I’ve tried. It’s a fluctuating aroma on me; that is, after a fairly energetic beginning, it settles on the skin and seems to fade quickly; in reality, it reactivates with body heat or simply a little breeze allows you to smell the perfume again, harmonious thanks to the contribution of wood and pepper, which seems slightly incense-like. It seems to fit perfectly with the season that is approaching, making you imagine an afternoon in front of a crackling fireplace. An interesting proposal with medium longevity on my skin and good strength for the first hour before fading and staying with you for several hours.

  • Well, another Van Cleef perfume that has completely captivated me. I won’t tire of saying that this house works with vanillas like no other. It is a soft, elegant, sophisticated, and chewy vanilla. It has that crunchy point of almond sweetened by tonka and vanilla, making it irresistible and appetising. I wouldn’t categorise it as gourmand because, despite being delicious, the urge to take a bite out of the person wearing it awakens in a subtle way. It isn’t a vanilla scent that errs on the side of obvious or predictable. Absolutely not. The woody notes polish the sweet notes, endowing them with the refinement I referred to. As for the tobacco note, I barely perceive it; I’m not able to detect any smoky point in the development, and I appreciate that. I find it a soft and delicate perfume from its start through to the dry-down, becoming creamier and richer in this phase. What a beautiful fragrance. I consider it completely unisex.

In the opening of this wonderful perfume, I notice the woods and the sparkling pepper that highlights the initial notes, so for a moment they give me a light touch of airy oud, absolutely delicious; then the almonds become present, bitter and unsweetened, giving way to the vanilla and finishing with tonka. It’s a quite delicate and unisex fragrance, one that invites people to get closer, sweet and bitter at the same time. I have to admit that for me, tonka in any perfume drives me mad, especially when paired with vanillas or vetiver.

  • Reading the previous reviews, I’m not sure if the tester I tried was faulty or simply the perfume didn’t suit my skin. The opening is a plasticine-like vanilla accompanied by dry wood, a hint of pepper, and camphorised almond, giving it an interesting and different twist compared to similar vanilla and tonka perfumes. As it dries, the almond fades and only that plasticine vanilla remains. The positive is that it has good longevity: one drop on my wrist lasted until the next morning. I had high hopes for this perfume, but it behaved terribly on my skin. It feels like a cold-weather unisex scent that would probably perform better at night, as the combination is somewhat heavy. It might be my personal issue with certain vanilla and tonka blends, but I found it a rather ugly perfume. If you like Ange ou les Démones, you’ll likely like this. They aren’t identical, but the vanilla/tonka combination is very similar. Pleasant: 4/10 Interesting: 5/10 Versatile: 6/10 Original: 6/10

  • I tried this at El Corte Inglés just a couple of hours ago and highly recommend testing it before buying. The opening is metallic, with a distinct tonka bean note. As it dries, it reminded me of something I own until I realised it’s very similar to DSQUARED2 WANT, which I absolutely hate (a metallic blend with Baccarat Rouge). In my opinion, this Van Cleef scent isn’t sweet; it’s a unisex fragrance leaning towards the masculine side. I recommend trying it because it doesn’t smell like what’s described on YouTube.
