Zero by Comme des Garçons is one of those fragrances that seem to say a lot without ever raising the pitch. Technically, it’s a clean, diaphanous and contained composition, opening with a citrus touch so subtle you wonder if it was real or just an illusion of freshness. What you do notice from the start is a varnished woody note, elegant in its rarity, yet without any desire to steal the show. It’s followed by a development dominated by polished ambroxan and a musky, talc-like base, evoking that contemporary minimalist luxury: it smells like almost nothing, but like something expensive. Its trail is of monastic discretion and its longevity is more conceptual: it lives better in the memory than on the skin. Although the structure is well-made, with no abrupt turns or dissonant notes, the whole is balanced, clean and aseptic, like an empty art gallery: impeccable, luminous… and a little desolate. Zero seems made for those who want to smell ‘good’ without actually smelling like ‘something’. Ideal for the office, interviews, hospitals or any place where neutrality is a plus. It works as a daily olfactory signature in summer if you’re looking not to inconvenience anyone or disturb the air conditioning. In short, Zero embodies its name: an almost spiritual presence that is there but without making itself noticed. Although technically well-constructed, it gives the impression of being more of a visual experiment than a real olfactory experience. Minimalism taken to the extreme, bordering on aromatic anaemia. If you were looking for something that wouldn’t commit you to anything, here it is. Neutrality elevated to art or product.

It smells like mixing Le Labo’s Another 13 with Moschino’s Toy Boy. It has good performance and a moderate trail. Out of all the CDG perfumes, I think this is the one I like the most, honestly.

It smells like a blend of Le Labo’s Another 13 and Moschino’s Toy Boy; it has good longevity and a moderate sillage. Out of the entire CDG line, this is undoubtedly my favourite.
