Last October, I was gifted several 10ml samples of this perfume in Cannes; I used about 20ml while travelling across Europe. While it doesn’t stand out for being particularly original in its composition, I believe it could shine among the marine fragrances of this year. I’ve never been a fan of pure ‘marine’ perfumes; those scents of drying, rotting seaweed or the salinity of skin after a day at the beach always put me off… they were never my thing, except for the Acqua di Gio collection by Armani. I’m a huge fan of the Profumo version, and trying this Royal Blue by Micallef brought back lovely memories of wearing the famous ADG Essenza when I first started down this path. Royal Blue is a blue fragrance with marine hints and a strong herbal charge, plus a very modern fougere twist with soft geranium and patchouli notes in the base, which is its most notable development. It’s like an ADG on steroids with a dash of the citrus from GN Tonic, also by Micallef; a lovely combination. Lacking in originality but, in my opinion, very well executed… my nostalgia for those bygone days is positively biasing my impressions. If you enjoy this type of ‘marine/herbal’ perfume, here is a great alternative to consider, plus its performance is excellent.
