About A Une Madone
A Une Madone: A Darkly Romantic Oriental Vanilla
Pierre Guillaume Paris brought out A Une Madone in 2021, a unisex fragrance belonging to the Oriental Vanilla family. It is a scent that balances the creaminess of vanilla with the rawness of animalic resins, creating an atmosphere that is both cosy and unsettling.
The house's founder, Pierre Guillaume, composed it himself.
The first impression is a sharp, green cardamom note that sparkles briefly before the heart emerges. Vanilla and sandalwood form a smooth, milky centre, but this is not a dessert-like vanilla. It is dry, slightly woody, and understated, allowing the sandalwood to add a soft, creamy texture.
The base is where the character lies. Castoreum, civet, and styrax give a leathery, animalic warmth that harks back to classical perfumery. Guaiac wood and gurjum balsam bring a smoky, balsamic depth, while myrrh contributes a touch of resinous melancholy. Together, they create a foundation that is both rich and strange.
Pierre Guillaume's listed accords include woody, vanillic, amber, warm spicy, powdery, musky, animalic, leather, smoky, and balsamic. These are all present, though the animalic and balsamic facets dominate the later stages. The pyramid structure is simple: cardamom at the top, vanilla and sandalwood in the middle, and a complex base of castoreum, guaiac wood, civet, styrax, myrrh, and gurjum balsam.
This is not a fragrance for those seeking a straightforward, sweet vanilla. It is darker, more atmospheric, and unapologetically vintage. The powdery, musky undertones evoke old-fashioned oriental fantasies, while the cardamom opening keeps it fresh and modern.
With a rating of 3.56 out of 5 from 185 ratings and just two reviews, A Une Madone is clearly a divisive scent. It challenges the wearer with its animalic base, but for those who appreciate complexity, it offers a rewarding and long-lasting evolution.
It will suit perfume enthusiasts who are drawn to oriental, vanillic scents with a leathery, animalic twist. Those who enjoy vintage-inspired, complex compositions and are not afraid of bold base notes will find much to admire.
A Une Madone is a brave and unconventional vanilla fragrance. It may not please everyone, but its dark, resinous character makes it a memorable choice for the adventurous wearer. Pierre Guillaume has created a scent that feels both nostalgic and original.

Bought a big sample for this perfume, having only smelt it on paper I found it lovely: creamy, sweet and mature. I was looking for an elegant, somewhat vintage, sweet but interesting scent for winter, thought this was it. I wore this perfume the next day for an important meeting, as I was excited to test the projection and longevity, but after the first 30 minutes of the creamy sweetness, it started smelling like vomit. Due to the heat of the room that I was in, I needed to run to the bathroom to wash myself off, as it was making me horribly sick. Other people noticed it too, it smells like rancid dead animal, or vomit (not like sweat at all, just like rotten food). I am terribly disappointed in the turnout of this scent, but on me, its purely animalic and putrid. It does last a long time as I still smelt it on me after washing myself.
A une Madone is a fragrance similar to Lune Feline by Atelier des Ors, but more gourmand, lactonic, and even with an animalic aspect that shows up from time to time. The vanilla of the perfume is very creamy, and I think that along with the resins and cardamom, it gives a very dense aspect, sweet in just the right measure, and it can be very suggestive. The perfume evolves little, but it remains present for a long time. Personally, I think Lune Feline is more elegant and balanced, but A une Madone has an animalic twist that can be novel or appealing to those who enjoy those nuances. Unisex, with excellent performance, for cold weather and for special occasions or dates, this is a good perfume, although not my favorite from the brand. Rating: 7/10
