Perfumes that broke my heart: A fleeting love between sea and incense. Acquasala fell in love with me instantly; its opening is aromatic and aquatic, with algae, neroli and spices creating a clean, salty, almost mystical sensation, like standing by the edge of a dark sea with a fresh breeze. But that moment lasts only a short while; as it dries, it abandons that special marine accord entirely. What remains is drier and earthier: incense, myrrh, iris and patchouli, well-constructed but lacking the initial magic. I would have loved for the algae to persist or for the heart to sustain it; if they had managed that, it would be iconic. What hurts most is that I don’t know where to classify it. It’s hard to pigeonhole, and that saddens me, because I liked it too much but I’m not sure I’d wear it. It’s like a brief, brilliant love that finds no place.
