Amber Aoud by Roja Dove

Sweet Cyprus. Oh, how I adore you. Your fruits on the skin, your bitter mosses, your musks… come and wrap me in your riches. I confess I feel a bit foolish wearing it straight out of the car, but at work or at home, no one knows: I am a king! It is so well-blended and celestial; every use reveals new surprises. At first, it smells of sweet rose, fig, and jam, opulent and slightly sickly, but once you get used to it, it is pure glory. The salty ambergris and the hum of civet hold it up and contrast beautifully. Very sexy, very wealthy. Then comes the oakmoss, birch, and cinnamon, a totally different side of the same fragrance. Beautiful and very intelligent. The ylang-ylang appears again. I expected a different kind of amber, that orange vanilla and resin glue with a touch of oud, but I would love to smell some oud, even if it’s not enough to justify it being the main ingredient. In short, it is an incredibly luxurious sweet fig, a precious ylang-ylang Cyprus like hell. Perhaps with a bit of creamy, woody oud to give it body, and a touch of salty, crunchy ambergris. It is so luxurious, almost soft, and all its sharp edges are rounded off with luxury. When is something this good, who needs sharp edges? It has a very, very rich scent. And it must be rich to pay for it.

💘 Roja Amber Aoud: ‘The perfume of my wedding’. One of the most exquisite scents I have ever smelled. I first encountered it in 2022 at Fortnum & Mason, London, surrounded by Arab sheikhs. Suddenly, this aroma. I smelled it and fell head over heels: distinct, mysterious, dense, impossible to categorise. I knew instantly that it was ‘the perfume’. 🪄 I thought I would never have something like this. The 100ml bottle cost over €700 and seemed untouchable. But I also knew it would be the one for my wedding. Years later, I managed to get it at a good price and I will keep my promise. 🌹 Beautiful, powerful, mystical. An empowered, natural, vibrant rose, nothing typical. It blends with a clean, majestic oud, nothing faecal, and an amber accord that shines from within. It is complex, carnal, elegant, and difficult to describe. 🌙 I wear it for special nights, birthdays, parties, moments where I want to feel unique. It is my favourite; it vibrates just like Black Orchid: dark, artistic, emotional. One of those scents that not only perfume but tell who you are. 🕢 Longevity and projection: extremely high, intense, enveloping. You cannot go unnoticed. ⭐ Rating: 10/10, an absolute treasure.

Good quality, but it hasn’t pleased me enough to recommend it. Thanks to a fortunate encounter with a generous and knowledgeable couple, I was able to try this Roja Dove Amber Oud. It starts with a citrus note, very well achieved, natural, soapy and alcohol-free, with a strong but not intrusive imprint, as a prelude to an aromatic rose that heads a secondary, orderly fruity development. The base is complex with a hint of animal notes mitigated by a swirl of indeterminate high-quality notes that, although they do not contrast, slightly obscure the clear reference. Lots of quality done with a broad brush. Good longevity and projection. It is appreciated because the result is pleasant (although not memorable). It is okay, but the price is high. If you want to impress with the scent, I do not see it as the best option; there are others, some cheaper, to boost the ego with compliments. It is a good fragrance, but I am not sure if it justifies its price.

I was able to try it via a decant. What stands out most to me are the citrus notes, the rose, the oud and a bit of amber. It is really long-lasting and noticeable. I note it as unisex and for winter. It is particular, try it before, it is very Arab, worthy of a sultan. But the price seems unjustifiable; I understand it will have one of those real ouds that take years to source. Although it seems a beauty, I think there are better perfumes at a better price.

How difficult it is to find an Oud that even perfume lovers enjoy. I had high expectations with this one. They say it is a wearable oud, but I detest the tobacco note terribly, and this one contains it. It tends towards the masculine side.
