Artisan Acqua by John Varvatos is a spicy aromatic fragrance for men. Launched in 2013, this olfactory composition was created by perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux. Upon release, the scent unfolds with bergamot, mandarin, lentiscus labdanum resin, galbanum, and angelica; the heart reveals a harmony of lavender, palmarosa, toscanol, statice, geranium, basil, coriander, and sambac jasmine; while the base rests on fir resin, musk, and patchouli.

Artisan Acqua is an atypical marine with a saline effect like mentholated spa salts. Add citrus and resins edged with flowers, and you have something sui generis; the Aqua designation is very novel for this brand. It has moderate projection and maintains beautiful awakenings according to body temperature, creating pleasant and unconventional auras. It is geared towards heat, with a discreet, virile and refined personality. It does not diminish CoolWater, but it is light years ahead of the worn-out aquatic proposals of the latter, which achieve with stridency what this does with refinement. In short, it does not resemble anything within or outside the aquatic segment.
Artisan Acqua has an exquisite opening with fir and basil: it is a herbal, liquor-like scent, not aquatic. It is modern if you have tried classics like Cool Water or Acqua di Giò Profumo; this is more evolved. It has moderate longevity and projection of around four hours, but its scent is so special that it is a delight to wear. It remains niche, so we shall wait a little longer.
Starts very marine, reminiscent of CoolWater but more updated. After half an hour it turns green, bitter and almost woody. It has a touch of high-quality laundry conditioner. The longevity is disappointing; it barely projects and has vanished after four hours. It smells good on the skin, but it’s not my style and I don’t see the value for the price.
Spectacular, fresh and a modernised vintage scent; very aromatic and not aquatic at all, save for that subtle marine note.
