Descripción

Genius by Renier Perfumes is an oriental woody fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2021, this composition is signed by perfumer Christian Carbonnel. Its top notes of Ceylon cinnamon, ginger, amber, bergamot and neroli give way to a heart where tobacco, tonka bean, Siam benzoin, ylang-ylang, coriander and iris create an enveloping atmosphere. The trail settles on a base of Madagascar vanilla, musk, labdanum and patchouli.

  • I picked up the Taino and Turkey set from Renier. This is the fourth I’ve tried so far, and it’s currently my favourite, so I feel brave enough to share my thoughts. Genius opens with a sparkling ginger and a pure, aromatic cinnamon. Within seconds, it unfolds into a red carpet featuring exquisite tobacco and crunchy, vanilla-infused tonka bean; further back, with less prominence, come the coriander and ylang-ylang. At some point, the whole composition reminds me of those cake cherries that no one actually eats, slightly boozy. These are the notes I can identify; the others still give me a headache. Everything is wrapped in a halo of sweet, tender cinnamon. After three hours, the fragrance feels creamier, as the cinnamon and tobacco mellow out to harmonise with the vanilla. With my inexperienced nose, Genius inevitably brings to mind Arabesque by The Merchant of Venice: a sweet tobacco with plum and cinnamon, but with less sillage, shorter longevity, and a more unisex vibe. Genius would be like the older sister that Arabesque looks up to, aspiring to be like her one day. Excellent for cold climates, totally unisex if you don’t mind the floral heart phase, with brilliant projection. It has just made its way onto my wishlist.

  • I’ll keep testing Renier; it’s a quality house, but this one just isn’t for me. The chords and notes suit me: amber, tonka bean, ginger, and ylang-ylang. However, the opening is sugary, which I hate directly, and that sweet, vanilla-infused amber doesn’t suit me at all. It reminds me of the amber in Grand Soir, which I absolutely dislike. It’s not for me, from start to finish. I understand why others love it; it performs well and is warm and potent, but simply not my cup of tea.

  • I’m still testing Renier; it’s a quality house, but this one just isn’t for me. The notes themselves—amber, tonka bean, ginger, and ylang-ylang—fit the description. However, the sugary opening is unbearable, and that sweet, vanilla-infused amber is a definite no for me. It reminds me of Grand Soir, which I absolutely dislike. It’s not for me from start to finish. I understand why others love it; it performs well and is warm and potent, but simply not my cup of tea.
