  When it dries, it smells a bit like Bulgari’s In Black, but Pininfarina lasts longer and has more facets; it is not as uniform or linear as Bulgari’s. It is a fine perfume with a floral and woody opening that then matures and settles, taking shape. It is not boring or linear. Good fixation.

  If you have the opportunity to get hold of it, do not hesitate to buy it; you will not regret it. How best to explain it? It would be an L’Homme but more talcum-powdered, something darker, and the notes feel very good, each nuance, with ingredient quality and less fresh than the Homme. Good longevity with a typical Guerlain trail, soft and not very annoying. A great refined perfume with class, pity there are no others like it.

  This fragrance is named after Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina, the great Italian car designer who worked with luxury brands. Its red Guerlain bottle recalls the Ferrari Testarossa and the Rolls-Royce Corniche III, a far cry from the boring bottles of today. A limited edition of 30ml, a very attractive specimen. From the outset, lime citrus and mint freshness are wrapped in that unmistakable, unctuous, velvety ‘Guerlinade’ from the dressing table, featuring iris, jasmine, bergamot, sandalwood, patchouli, and tonka bean. What’s not on the label? By now I’ve smelled many fragrances with hidden notes, so nothing new. The ‘Guerlinade’ accord isn’t as potent as in other Guerlain fragrances, for instance L’Instant pour Homme. In PININFARINA COLLECTOR, some sweetness has been removed in favour of pungent, acidic, woody and mentholated tones. How do lime and peppermint combine with woods? PININFARINA has mastered this. After a while, a dark, dry rum emerges. A drastic, resounding and vigorous aroma, close to cognac macerated in an old oak barrel. When the woody base comes out, PININFARINA takes on intense, mentholated cedar and an earthy, shadowy patchouli. This liquorish ensemble, laden with mint, produces such intense ethereal vapours that they rise from my arm to my nose, literally getting me drunk. The trail and longevity are very high. It doesn’t become intrusive because Guerlain has always been synonymous with good taste, but I must say it’s advisable not to over-apply, not because it becomes stomach-churning, but because it takes over the senses until you lose consciousness. Such is its degree of intoxication and envelopment. GUERLAIN HOMME PININFARINA is a perfume with an haughty and elegant imprint. The sophistication and classicism of its scent do not make it attractive to all current taste addicts. It is a fragrance that today may seem anachronistic and belonging to the Island of Lost and Forgotten Scents. Discontinued, forgotten, ephemeral and with the charm of fortuitous discoveries.
