I give up in the face of evidence. Today I was testing perfumes and the shop assistant showed me White in Black; it was like hitting my nose with a synthetic disco hormone something that even with coffee beans didn’t make me want to keep smelling it. I’ve been keeping a comparative list of current men’s fragrances to see which stands out as elegant and pleasant for everyone regardless of age. It’s very difficult. The opening has a strong citrus ambroxan imprint where the olibanum isn’t easily noticeable. The development revolves around the ambroxan leaving a mix of lavender cedar and patchouli to fight it out. I felt this scent or something very similar years ago from a neighbour who flooded the lift. I think it’s masculine by today’s standards just as much as the fragrances it competes with. The plus is that it’s not sweet and lacks that plastic laboratory imprint. Longevity and projection are just as good as Sauvage Elixir Scandal Invictus etc. As with any perfume there’s a chance of receiving compliments that boost self-esteem and make the wearer stand out for better or worse. It’s a good option to stand out with your scent.
I must point out that I’m unable to break down notes in any perfume unless it’s lemon peach or strawberry; the rest are just rich or not-so-rich smells to me. White in Black is rich slightly sweet and half-mentholated. The scent is very good and for the price it offers more than you pay. They say it resembles Layton but I don’t know what that smells like. I bought it blind just like all my perfumes and I won again though it’s hard to go wrong with this brand. If you know Layton and compare them you’ll surely find this one lacking; I rate it by what it is: for me an excellent cologne even if it doesn’t last as long but I reapply and the problem is solved. Should I recommend it? I don’t know do what you want with your money and if you buy it you’ll surely get a pleasant surprise. For me it’s 10 out of 10. Cheers.
What a job this girl Karine Dubreuil-Sereni did! She really put her heart into making something unique adding talent studying the market and avoiding such clone-like comparisons. Although it has a facet as exquisite as Marly’s Layton Parfum this one has its own soul and transforms into a little-known gem. The box came with a black and white-tipped ‘make your mark’ pencil from Lalique ideal for personalising the bottle.
Let’s start by saying it smells 90-95% like Layton. What’s the difference? Layton smells more mentholated and sweet due to the apple. It lasts half as long and costs less than $50. Let’s forget whether it’s a clone or a Galloway payback. It’s a good alternative; Lalique makes fragrances with quality ingredients. It projects for an hour and lingers on the skin for 5-6 hours nothing a reapplication can’t solve. I’d buy it again to save my Layton and smell the same. You won’t regret it.
Wow! This fragrance surprised me. Totally inspired by Layton it’s 95% identical. The opening is slightly less mentholated and more citrusy but it has less trail and projection. For the price it’s a bargain and I see it as more versatile than Layton.
Beautiful fragrance. Opens with citrus and evolves into a vanilla and lavender touch. It’s sensual an aroma you don’t want to stop smelling. Good value compared to Layton. To me it smells like Invictus Victory but more citrusy. Worth it I recommend it.
Bought blind based on good reviews and the attributed similarity to Parfums de Marly Layton. It has excellent depth and longevity, slightly sweet and citrusy, complex and full of nuances. Very well executed, doesn’t smell mass-produced, great quality.
I took a leap of faith based on the glowing reviews and its resemblance to Parfums de Marly’s Layton, which really delivers. It boasts incredible depth and longevity, striking a perfect balance between sweet and citrus notes. The scent is highly complex with numerous nuances; it’s exceptionally well-crafted, doesn’t smell like a supermarket product, and the quality is top-notch.
As others have noted, it’s inspired by Layton (rumoured to be a ‘revenge’ by Lalique following the Galloway from PdM, though coincidence or not, it bears a certain resemblance to Lalique White but improved). Without calling White in Black bad, it simply doesn’t match Layton: the longevity, trail, and projection are half as strong, and the scent is less three-dimensional, more straightforward, perhaps with lower-quality ingredients. Would I recommend buying it? It depends on the price. At the 34.95€ I paid, yes, it’s a good buy. At the usual 40€, also yes. But at the 80€ I see now or the official 110€, I can’t recommend it: for double the price, you get the original with better performance (you need fewer sprays of Layton) and higher quality.
The opening is rich, but it didn’t last at all, barely two hours. I’m not sure if it’s due to the spring here in the USA or something else. I’ll try it in summer to see how it behaves there; I’ll update this review or confirm whether it performs better, and I’ll let you know.
Excellent fragrance, a sweet and vanilla scent that should be in your collection. 10/10, 97% similarity to a great perfume 😉
Undoubtedly, it’s a brazen and brutal inspiration, over 85% similar to Marly depending on the heat. The key: Lalique features toasted cardamom, so it’s not as sweet and heavy as Marly. What a rush. I recommend it; on clothes it lasts over 12 hours, and on skin around nine hours.
One of my top 10 among the 150 perfumes I own. Superior quality ingredients: rich, distinguished, casual, timeless, sexy, sober, distinct… the only drawback was it took me a couple of years to find it in Chile, but at a price well below what it could cost. It’s worn all year, even summer nights; I love it. Suitable for those over 25.
The quality-to-price ratio leaves Layton in the dust.
I haven’t tried Layton but this smells like a marvel. Correct performance not a beast. I notice a certain resemblance to Guerlain’s L’homme Ideal line I don’t know if anyone else notices. The truth is the quality is superlative.
I haven’t tried Layton, but this smells wonderful. Performance is correct, not beastly. I notice a certain resemblance to Guerlain’s L’homme Ideal; I wonder if others perceive it too. The truth is, the quality is superlative.
Excellent value for money. Almost a carbon copy of Layton especially in its dry-down though with worse longevity and projection. Layton’s opening is more sparkling with apple as the protagonist accompanied by violet and jasmine. In the dry-down both stand out for the combo of cardamom cedar/ho wood patchouli and vanilla. Behind this fragrance is Karine Dubreuil-Sereni who collaborated in the past with Hamid Merati-Kashani (creator of Layton PDM). Everything else is said: versatility in seasons and clothing. You will NEVER look bad and generally it’s liked. As soon as my Layton (Batch 2017) runs out I’ll go for this Lalique White in Black. A 10/10.
Excellent value for money. Almost a clone of Layton when dry, though it lasts and projects less. Layton’s opening is more sparkling with apple, violet, and jasmine; when dry, both share cardamom, cedar, patchouli, and vanilla. Behind this is Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, who previously collaborated with Hamid Merati-Kashani (creator of Layton PDM). The rest is said: versatile across seasons and clothing. You never go wrong, and it usually pleases. When I finish my 2017 Layton, I’ll move on to this Lalique White in Black. A 10/10.
To those who claim Layton lasts longer, I refer to old batches; current ones are merely decent. Note the difference: Layton possesses that sweet apple note absent here, whereas Lalique carries resins and incense with a warmth Layton lacks. Without the apple, the citrus shines brighter. Ultimately, it’s a matter of taste: I own several Marlys and never bought Layton as it didn’t convince me for its price. I prefer this one. I’m not saying it’s superior, but rather more masculine due to being less sweet and darker with the resins. I don’t see it on women. It’s a fantastic fragrance at a laughable price, and it’s welcome that they come in 125 ml like the entire Lalique line.
