With high expectations following the MEM show and Gardoni’s style, Maai has let me down. While the civet and castoreum notes keep their animal promise, I expected more floral brightness, particularly a narcissus that would shine brighter as it dried. The scent ends up dominated by the smoky castoreum and waxy civet, resulting in a flat and boring experience compared to other chypres like Mandodari by Prin, which are more luminous with a more distinct dry-down. I admit it is well-constructed and manages those notes without being unpleasant, but ultimately it feels forgettable; undoubtedly, the true masterpiece remains MEM.
My goodness! This caught me off guard. I received a 0.7 ml sample as a gift with my order from Luckyscent, and it is the most luxurious modern chypre I have tried. It is green, exuberant, and resinous floral with plenty of animal notes. It hooked me on the first spray. It begins with a hit of aldehydes and black peppermint (actually eucalyptus) over nutty notes. Gradually, a bouquet of white flowers and roses emerges as the aldehydes settle. But the star is an impressive base of well-blended animal notes and woods, present from the start and slowly taking the lead, led by civet and a sweet, smoky castoreum with a leather touch. (The Bogue website also cites hyraceum, oakmoss, sandalwood, cedar, resins, musks, and vetiver). I’ll just say the animal touch is… wow! Unable to resist smelling the bandage, I applied it to my arm. My partner stood still and asked what I was wearing. It seems she likes it as much as I do. I asked if she would wear it. She said she could… but that she enjoyed it so much on me that she preferred not to. I will use up the rest of the sample. If the enthusiasm doesn’t fade, I think Maai deserves a full bottle.
A brutal perfume if you like animal scents. Very linear, with balanced aldehydes at the start that make the civet (very present) sparkle and feel fresh. In the middle, the tuberose tries to fight the civet to stand out. At the end, only civet and more civet remain with soft resinous touches. It is an ode to civet: if you can’t stand it, run. It is a fragrance that makes a presence, mature, nocturnal, and for cold weather. Indoors, it gradually dominates the room, silencing other scents. It requires great personality; wearing it, you sound like Traviata. Everyone will look at you wondering if Louis XVI has returned with his wits about him.
I love Maai. I am not a fan of such animal perfumes, but here the civet is blended so well that it never bothers me at any point. In fact, it performs as well as or better than other animal scents like Diaghilev by Roja or Mandorari by Prin, which remind me of them quite a bit. The aldehydes give it a shine, a puffy and airy touch, and help it project more without the civet and resins sticking to the skin as often happens. I don’t know if I would buy it because I am not sure if I see myself with this aroma often, but I do not rule it out, and that is already a lot for one like this. My favourite remains Douleur, the rarest and most difficult, but the one that reminds me of nothing. Bogue is highly recommended. The aldehydes give it a shine, a smoky and airy touch that helps project more and prevents the civet and resins from sticking to the skin as often happens. I don’t know if I would buy it because I am not sure if I see myself wearing this aroma often, but I do not rule it out, which is already a lot for a perfume like this. My favourite from the brand remains Douleur, because, although it is the rarest and most difficult of all, it is the one that reminds me the least of anything I have tried before. Bogue is a brand highly recommended. For those who like resinous florals with strong civet and aldehyde notes, Maai is a great option! Bogue was a discovery for me last year; since I was given a sample in an exchange, I became a fan of the brand. Maai is floral, but not the typical floral: the rose that stands out has a citrus base, although it does not carry citrus, it is something floral that gives me that sensation. It is not a usual floral; it is unique, with a resinous base and a super addictive animal touch. For me, it is an essential, just like MEM or O/E from the house. A hug, Gardoni.
The Bogue house was a discovery for me last year; since I received a sample through an exchange, I fell in love with the brand. Maai is a floral, but not the usual kind. The note I perceive most is rose, but with a citrus base, perhaps due to some floral aspect that gives that olfactory sensation, even though it has no citrus notes. It is not a typical floral; it is completely unique and has a resinous base that makes it super addictive with that animal touch. For me, it is an essential in my collection, just like others from the brand such as MEM or O/E, the wonder of Gardoni.
