In magical markets in Mexico, such as San Juan de Dios in Guadalajara, lost treasures are hidden. I found an old Michael for Men (the predecessor to the current one) for 800 pesos. It smells of spicy tobacco that sweetens, exquisite and elegant. The seller said it’s seductive for going well-dressed. Now I collect classics like Opium, Kouros, or Guerlain Mojito. If I won the lottery, I’d buy perfumes. This vintage is a mandatory blind buy.

A distinct style: initially smells of dirty, resinous, and herbal tobacco, which is quite shocking. The magic happens as it dries down: the scent softens, and classic fruity patchouli emerges. It is the opposite of Sauvage Vintage; one is citrusy, this one is oriental and fougère. In summary, the performance is perfect; I give it 10 across the board.

Liquid male art: I bought the vintage 2001 Michael Kors blind and got it right. It’s orthodox and serious, although the opening is flat; the magic happens as it dries. I detect sweet-sour plum and fantastic tobacco, without the honeyed sweetness of others. I can’t isolate the cinnamon, but it’s potent. It lasts hours on the skin with a moderate trail. It’s more nocturnal and autumnal, with a regal bottle. Careful, it’s sharp as a white weapon. Disadvantage: discontinued and hard to find. Perfect for a collection; it makes us feel proud and even betrays our personal fragrance. 9/10.

Upon application, I smelled tobacco, plum, and nuts. It reminded me of an old cologne from years ago. Initially, it seemed a bit boozy, but after two hours, the liquorish sensation disappeared, leaving a slightly powdery feel. I detected suede, patchouli, and anise, but no incense. The tobacco was strong yet sweet and soft. Although it is not generic, I do not see it as very innovative. I use it in any season except extreme heat. It lasts 12 hours with a medium trail. A good fragrance to try, but I would not recommend it blindly nor place it in my top 10. Perhaps it lacks a wood note like cedar to be more elegant.

What a beautiful scent: warm, semi-sweet, fruity, with excellent handling of tobacco, incense, and suede. Ideal for romance. The opening is strong with star anise and spices, then moves into a symphony of tobacco and incense that softens with suede and sandalwood. Despite being sweet, it is very masculine. I tried the 2001 and 2014 versions; there are few differences. The 2001 is stronger with more intense tobacco, while the 2014 is more docile, highlighting the incense and suede. Both are ideal for fresh climates, autumn, and winter, perfect for romantic dates. In terms of projection, I preferred the 2014, but both have longevity superior to the average. If you like Opium Pour Homme or Egoiste by Chanel, you will love this. It is a modern version of that oriental style.

It has been a while since a fragrance made me fall in love like this, thanks to its strong tobacco note in the opening that reminded me of Roger & Gallet’s Open, but sweet, with cardamom, cinnamon, bergamot, and star anise. Then follows the tobacco with power and suede. I did not detect the incense, perhaps overshadowed by the rest. At the end, there is residual tobacco with patchouli and sandalwood, and a sweet sensation I am not sure is plum or nuts. This dry down is generic but addictive. The strength lies in the opening and the heart of sweet tobacco with suede. It is the dreamed-of tobacco note, although other gourmand notes overpower it. Very good for winter and autumn, with moments of freshness as it is a fougère. It has potential for conquest. Heavy to moderate trail, controllable, and lasted over 12 hours. It has become my top ten. It was replaced by Michael Kors for Men last year, so do not get them confused. If you find it, it is a recommended blind buy.

Strong at first but it sweetens as it develops; perfect for autumn or spring if you want to make a statement. Although the notes don’t say so, I detect a very subtle hint of honey. The trail and longevity are top-notch, though it depends on the skin; a friend with pH issues wore it for 6–8 hours and it was a success.
