The opening is pure natural lavender, ultra-powerful and filling the room; at first, it smells only of lavender. After an hour, as it dries down, the pineapple emerges, and for a while, it recalls the openings of Aventus. Given the notes, you’d expect more complexity, but it doesn’t build special chords: the lavender dominates and the rest barely peeks through. Its flaw is that it seems more like a lavender oil than a perfume, although as it dries down, the synthetic fruit becomes apparent (pineapple is always synthetic, but here it’s less well-executed than in others). It’s not a rich barbershop fougère like Invasion Barbare. Initial projection fills the room, then maintains a decent presence for about 2.5 hours and lasts around 8 to 10 hours. I’m not sure, but recent Malle releases don’t quite hit the mark for me, likely due to the change in ownership. It’s noticeable that quality has slipped with the use of mainstream synthetics and fewer expensive natural notes; ultimately, the nuances fall flat, and at these prices, my answer is a resounding ‘no’. The compositions remain good, but M F a W is a lovely accord of sweet lavender and pineapple, juicy like Vero Kern’s Kiki. Benaim uses pineapple instead of passion fruit, yet it sounds almost like a copy of Kiki’s concept. That one smelled far richer, with infinitely superior essences and a spectacular, rounded result, whereas this falls short. Rating: 6.5.

Music for a While by Frederic Malle is a distinctive scent, nothing bad but it doesn’t quite convince me. It opens with a fruity pineapple that sometimes smells overripe and gives an uncomfortable sensation, though it disappears as it dries. The lavender adds freshness alongside the geranium, but the overall blend doesn’t work well for me. It has a sweetness between caramel and soapy sugar that occasionally smells like air freshener and puts me off. I don’t think it’s a bad smell, but I can’t see myself wearing it. I’d consider it suitable for temperate climates due to that sweetness. Good performance and a high price. I prefer other creations by FM. Rating: 6/10

On my skin, this doesn’t smell of pineapple or lavender; it’s pure woody patchouli from start to finish. As it dries, it sweetens, losing that initial dryness and becoming much more pleasant.
