  I’m absolutely floored that Nina Ricci abandoned Snow Princess for trifles like La Tentation or that Nina Gold Edition, which is nothing but a re-packaging of the 2006 scent sold as a collection piece; only Nina Pop makes sense for its festive vibe. It’s an incredibly rare treasure I snagged at a local perfumerie at a ridiculous price because I knew it was discontinued. It’s identical to the 2006 version but less sweet, less brash, and far less mediocre. It opens with that typical citrus blend from the house, then diverges from the 2006 to become more subtle, balanced, and gourmand. If you loved the brash Granny Smith apple of the previous one, here it is restrained, humble, and perfectly measured. The caramel takes the lead, but the apple provides freshness, preventing it from becoming cloying like praliné often does. It finishes with woody vanilla and a touch of musk; I don’t detect the apple burst and I’m genuinely sorry because that was the highlight. It’s a rare fragrance within its family, coherent yet striving to surprise, resulting in something more beautiful and abstract than the others. It smells of Oliver Twist, the rejected Nadja, frozen coastlines, solitary troubadours, caged maidens, orphaned children, the witch of Narnia, and a sad snowfall. The trail is fine but the longevity is comfortable. If you want one, hunt for it online as it’s impossible to find in stores.
