At first it seems a bit heavy, but after two hours it blends with the skin and leaves a very subtle trail of oud and herbs. It reminds me of Nasomatto’s Black Afgano, but much more discreet.

Oud Or by Houbigant is, without a doubt, one of the best European rose-oud combinations I’ve tried in two years. It has character, but it plays well if you know how to modulate it so as not to overwhelm. It calls for maturity, yet it’s not a beast or anything unusual; it tames easily with olfactory experience. It doesn’t seek to be innovative, but rather to elevate the combo. I compare it to Oud Aquilaria: similar profile, but without the apple in the opening, with more personality and longevity. The rose comes out acidulous with a spiced raspberry, then the saffron, geranium, and herbal notes give way before reaching the medicinal oud in the base. Performance is 8 to 10 hours on skin, projecting well for the first two hours and then staying in the personal bubble. Ideal for formal or semi-formal situations; I wear it to work and it works well. It can be used all year round, except in very hot weather due to the vanilla and saffron. My advice: always test niche perfumes on skin before buying; your skin is the best judge.

What a difference between paper and skin: on paper it smells very heavy. The opening is too much rose, perhaps with a hint of raspberry that I do not detect, but for me it is too much. Then something strident emerges, I think geranium (which I cannot stand) and a bit of rancidity, which spoils the blend. The dry-down is another matter: it is a rich wood blend with a gentle, almost imperceptible oud, very enjoyable. A pity that those middle notes spoil everything for me.

The final dry-down is absolutely stunning; it smells divine. That soft woody and vanilla scent that lingers on the skin is heavenly. The top and middle notes are excellent, even though I’m not a huge fan of raspberry, but the way it dries down is in a league of its own. All of Houbigant’s new releases are delicious; the only one I don’t like is Patchouli Sauvage because it offers nothing original and smells like the 1980s. This oud, Bois Mystique, and Tabac Nomade are pure elegance. They smell glorious and evoke nostalgia, with nothing synthetic about them. They’re not for a young crowd; they smell vintage yet modern at the same time. So far, I haven’t tried anything from Houbigant that I didn’t like.

They aren’t for a youthful audience; they smell vintage yet modern at the same time. So far, I haven’t tried anything from Houbigant that I didn’t like.
