I found it by chance in a drawer a few weeks ago: a generous sample of Affinessence, an unknown brand that surprises. I’m not an oud fan; it’s often a polarising note, very artistic but complicated for daily wear. The opening is intense, woody, with clashing oud and patchouli and a dubious citrus hint, perhaps due to the bitter nuance of the oud. It feels mature, almost lacquered or like paint, complicated at first but improving with time. The lacquered sensation fades, giving way to a deeper, earthy, spiced aroma. The oud loses strength and yields to the protagonist: hours later, a residual soapy and spicy phase, like Tom Ford’s Oud Wood, clean but with body. I would have liked it to be present from the start. I’d reserve it for fresh seasons and formal occasions; the dry-down is versatile, but the overall scent isn’t, so I wouldn’t wear it daily. The price, I suppose, is due to natural oud, and although the ending is captivating, the harsh opening makes it dispensable. I’d only recommend trying it if you love oud and have a good collection.

A fine drizzle in Florence, night falling, a newly bought leather coat with water droplets: that’s the essence. Few fragrances change so much over time. It starts strong, with potent oud and patchouli, but the citrus touch of eucalyptus makes it bearable for those who can’t handle oud. As it dries, it becomes elegant and powerful: clean oud, woods, and fine leather well-presented. At this price, I expected more projection and longevity.
