The problem with being a ‘groupie’ is that you end up thinking the artist owes you. If the work doesn’t satisfy, you feel your trust has been outraged. I’ve been a groupie of Maison Crivelli for a short while; Oud Maracuja and Oud Stallion blew my mind, and I’m angry about the good weather for not being able to wear them until autumn. I’ve smelled almost all their fragrances and applaud the intention to create something different. But I don’t understand Safran Secret. I woke up uneasy on Saturday, maybe because of the pistachio croissant, but I don’t think so. Nor because of walking with my girlfriend and my dog in Milan or laughing at influencers in the Duomo. I was nervous to smell the house’s latest perfume. I was heading to Rinascente imagining its scent. Okay, some saffron, but Crivelli is never literal; it seeks friction. The name ‘Secret’ on its own gave no clues. If they’re so confident with the name, I thought they’d managed a bomb. To summarise: I smelled it at 1 pm and by 3 pm I had no appetite, even though I’d had a Spritz. This perfume can be denied sincerity. It carries saffron, yes. What I don’t know is if it carries more. It smells like walking into your grandmother’s kitchen on a Sunday, half-cooking, sending you to set the table. It smells like paella, chicken in pepitoria, artichokes Montillana style, fideuá with squid… all the saffron recipes. I’m not saying it’s a bad smell, but definitely not for me. They might label it gourmand; for me, it’s a Carmencita spice jar run through a blender. Inevitably, this groupie was disappointed. But let’s not lose faith. A kilo of saffron costs between €3,000 and €10,000. This perfume is about €215 for 50ml. Who knows, that might be where the secret of Safran Secret lies.
I really liked it. It’s perfect for the office or if you want to exude elegance. It’s distinct; it reminds me of Sartorial, nothing like Oud Wood. It has a very important air; with H24 it’s like its saffroned version: green elegance versus this one. It comes with that strong sensation of dry-cleaning steam ironing suits, the smell of freshly ironed shirts, steam, ozone, metal, and smoke, followed by the saffron which gains volume as it dries without losing that airy and metallic feeling. Very good in its style.
Absolutely modern and current. Synthetic, yet without the laboratory sterility; somehow natural but distinct. It doesn’t smell like perfume; instead, it develops a sophisticated aroma that envelops you. It’s a tribute to the digital age. I wonder what will remain of our favourite perfumes in the future. Safran Secret is fascinating; the notes are hard to discern, changing like a chameleon. Sometimes licorice, then woody nuances, black tea, pepper, with that subtle rubber note and full-on saffron. These synthetic notes are so well intertwined that they never make you wrinkle your nose; it’s very harmonious. Why does it smell so different after four hours compared to the start? You’re left with a dreamlike fragrance that captivates, a cloud of sweet spices with a bright woody touch. It’s a high level of craftsmanship that either repels or entraps you. Certainly not for everyone, but Robocop would love it. Significant price; test before buying.
I’ve read it’s an ode to the technological era, and honestly, it is. Philosophically, it’s a symbol of today’s and tomorrow’s social paradigm. It’s original and innovative, with one foot in today and the other in tomorrow. Don’t call me crazy, but if you hear it and reflect on it, you might understand. It’s an exceptional blend of spices, metal, wood, leather, and smoke tied together by saffron. It’s less heavy than its oud counterparts and more wearable for everyday life. It projects well and lasts longer on the skin, but not for summer; better for afternoon or evening. Not everyone will like it, but those who do will love it.
It’s a dry woody scent with a good dose of vetiver. It has that metallic touch, like the steam from ironing shirts in the laundry, which gives it a unique character. Over time, it warms up and softens. Personally, I wouldn’t buy it, and if I did own it, I wouldn’t wear it much.
