The top notes combine matcha tea, bergamot and ginger; the heart reveals aquatic notes, patchouli, labdanum and frankincense; while the base notes settle on Laotian oud, oud wood and guaiac wood.

If we open ourselves up to trying new things, these surprises arrive too. Morillas takes a risk by blending clashing scents that end up enhancing each other: delicate green notes, woods, and water embrace an incense that adds that smoky touch. The aquatic elements are used skillfully alongside the oud, which smells verdant, fresh, subtle, and resinous. It convinces me more than I expected: it’s rough, sometimes damp and salty like a kiss on the sea, yet nothing uncomfortable thanks to that curious game of contrasting notes that fit together perfectly. The fresh opening embraces the earthy and woody aspects of the oud and patchouli, resulting in a convincing scent that envelops you without being invasive or too penetrating. In the dry-down, bergamot and ginger take the lead, softened by the matcha tea, while distinct puffs of oud and incense become more pronounced after about 40 minutes. The heart features more smoke and abundant wood, which grows considerably in the base. The incense smells fresh and slightly sacred; the patchouli and the two ouds now come across as acidic and quite dark. At this point, I think of a small Buddhist temple offering shelter when the morning has yet to light up after a tropical storm.
