  The other day, while out for a walk, I stumbled upon a bottle of Celine, a fragrance that went largely unnoticed back in the early 2000s. The house, which shares a style with Chloé and is a giant of French fashion, hasn’t taken a single step forward in perfumery. As I’m interested in launches from between 1998 and 2004 and the bottle only cost four euros, I bought it blind. By the way, Michael Kors was the creative director at launch. Verdict: Celine for Men is utterly irrelevant, frankly rubbish. Neither Annick Menardo’s name, the suggestive notes, nor the trend of hedonistic woody scents are part of its DNA. It has the consistency of a cheap drugstore cologne and doesn’t last even an hour and a half, leaving a wretched trail. This morning, on the third day, I applied twelve sprays to my neck, and by half-past ten while having lunch, I couldn’t even smell it on myself. The funny thing is, it’s a delicious eau de cologne. Overcoming the fact that it doesn’t last, I love it: silky and comforting, with a base of woody liniment and soft spices, plus almost edible aromatic touches, like floating in freshly ironed pyjamas. It recalls the men’s scents from the late nineties, generic but delicious, from when Zara only had one cologne. This Celine is exactly that, reminiscent of those formulas when minimalism was dying. There’s a barely perceptible nutmeg, soft cedar, and perhaps a hint of chestnut skin. It’s unnecessary and a bit of a rip-off, yet it hooks you. I tried Armani Privé Bois d’Encens and that was also a litre-sized cologne with abysmal longevity. This is the same thing, but it cost me twenty euros at a haberdashery. If you see it cheap and enjoy woody scents with skin and freshly ironed sheets, you’ll like it.
