I liked it when I tried it in the shop, but I can’t smell it at home. I’ve had the bottle for a year and it’s still the same. Maybe it needs time, or perhaps I’ll give it as a gift.
Oud with red berries and cardamom. Sounds familiar and expensive, nothing you haven’t heard before.
It’s dense and complex, a balanced yet challenging blend. Straight out of the bottle, it smells of smoky oud and wood, then turns medicinal with spices and herbs; only the cedar softens it a little. Over time, the herbal notes dominate and the cumin-laced oud stands out at the end. It’s very intense, oriental, and can be overpowering quickly, but it lasts nine hours with strong projection at the start.
It smells fantastic and isn’t a complicated oud. The opening is explosive and rich without the oud dominating, but in the mid-notes it emerges and becomes animalic without going too far. In the dry-down it settles powdery and surprisingly fresh; I think it’s bergamot, which is unusual for this type of fragrance.
Not for everyone, but if you like animalic oud, you’ll be hooked. It’s addictive and makes my top ten.
