A seduction of the Spirit. The bottle of the extract, with intense red, black, and gold colours, is stimulating. The drama and passion sparkle in that play of colours and shapes. The flacons of the eau de toilette and eau de parfum in various formats are also worthy of highlighting. The union of esotericism and sensuality; Maxim’s wants to hypnotise us, proclaiming those concepts. Maxim’s is a legendary restaurant from the late 1800s, incredibly ancient, decorated with all the luxury of the Art Nouveau era, an icon of the ‘Belle Epoque’. During its over 100 years of history, relevant stars of fashion, art, acting, distinguished leaders, and influential people passed through. In the 70s, it was considered the most famous restaurant in the world, as well as the most expensive. In the 80s, it was bought by Pierre Cardin, who took it even higher, expanding its beauty, not only in the original building but also exporting it to the world. So, why is there a perfume from a restaurant? Well, Maxim’s is not just any restaurant. Upon acquiring it, Pierre Cardin, with the aim of expanding his image, it was no surprise that he commissioned a fragrance that would gather all the luxurious aspects of the place and conjure its rich history. Dominique Ropion, not yet well-known but promising much, was tasked with creating this fragrance, curiously the same year that Givenchy would launch his iconic Ysatis, also by his hand. The details of its aroma are impeccable: a velvety red rose with drops of ambered honey, of supreme quality. It has some green notes bordering its petals, a smokiness that velvets its structure. A musky rose without a doubt, with some carnation and a fruit that is surely the cause of that honeyed sensation. The quality of this eau de toilette is superior to any first-tier fragrance, but I must also warn that, while its opening is striking within minutes, the projection is soft. It maintains all its quality, but I do not feel it as an overwhelming dramatic rose, like in Fendi Donna, Coco Chanel, or Gucci III. Maxim’s has moss, some patchouli, labdanum, it has musk, something spicy, something green, but it does not try to go too far. It prefers to stay soft, like an erotic whisper of a lover during the midnight. It sits lightly on the skin, inviting only those who manage to get close. Perhaps the EDP or the extract have more tenacity in projection; in the EDT, the fixation is good, lasting 7 hours and still perceptible. Simply rich.

Simply sublime. The fashion designer Pierre Cardin bought Maxim’s in 1981 and renovated it with love, dedicating parts of the house to an Art Nouveau museum and gradually even opening branches. Numerous legends, rumours, and scandals have grown around Maxim’s; it is said that Brigitte Bardot entered the bar barefoot one night. Why? No one knows. I would love to chat with a woman wearing Maxim’s Pour Femme on a night when stars compete to fill the sky and the smell of the sea arrives accompanied by the sound of the waves, before walking home with her perfume and her eyes inside. The opening shines with a variety of floral touches. For a while, the rose is in the foreground, but quite discreet. Gradually, light notes such as orange blossom, mimosa, and some darker ones like carnation and narcissus become recognisable. It is quite aldehydic and unfolds like a bouquet bathed in the sun, before transforming afterwards into a chypre with exuberant oakmoss. Everything is well integrated here, with everything else that is happening or approaching soon. The heavyweights in the base are already evident within minutes, but they lurk during the top and heart, giving a tantalising idea of what the dry-down will be, and it is certainly one of the things I enjoy about vintage fragrances that are built in this way. Subsequently, the soft amber gives the perfume an oriental air and finishes pleasantly with a wonderful powdery touch. It is still available at optimal prices, so there is no need to break the piggy bank. If you like chypres and florientals with a good dose of moss and have the personality to wear it as it deserves, jump in without fear, Olympic pool style; the reward is guaranteed. Magnificent.

What a magnificent treasure! The opening is absolutely stunning and immense, even for me. After a while, I notice something ‘woody’ (forgive the purists), which is the part I like least, yet I can’t stop sniffing myself. As for the dry-down? Just relax, inhale, exhale, and let the perfume invade you… it’s your skin speaking. They say that at the Maxim’s restaurant, staff used to find coins, rings, and earrings… hidden between the cushions of their sofas. They forgot to mention they found another jewel… this one. I want my life to smell like this. PS. Courtesy of Jerry Drake.

This perfume has been a true discovery. It opens with a sweet melon and a touch of mint that, curiously, blend perfectly without clashing at all; it is very well balanced. Then emerges a floral bouquet, a lovely mix of rose, carnation, orange blossom… adding ‘pink’ and green nuances. From there, it evolves into what I would describe as a soft oriental, smoky, ambered, musky, creamy, and vanilla-scented. It is this final aroma that has prevailed on my skin for hours. I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to try it. Courtesy of @Jerry Drake.
