Tempest is a beast. Imagine leather bags in a souk with spices in the distance, bare feet in sweaty babouches, horse sweat, storm-soaked esparto, muddy straw and petrol. It is animal, dark, intriguing and nocturnal, yet luxurious and powerful. The trail is enormous. As it dries, the animal notes recede and the woody, elegant ones take over. Hard to wear: it suggests a powerful gentleman who hides something. If you want to stand out among elegant people, you won’t go unnoticed. For women, only for an older, extremely elegant lady.

I love Tempest. With the K line from Xerjoff, Kemi is something else entirely, but this is the easiest to wear. Very friendly, with those citrus top notes and an oud that doesn’t bite like its sisters, leaving that vetiver dry down.

  • Pure horror. It is unpleasant even without spraying, smelling of a stable, and I detect no pleasant notes. I apologise for being so clear, but it is totally unbearable.

  • Oh my goodness! What have they done? Here is one I treasured from Kemi’s Tempest. It ran out, so I bought this without trying, thinking it wouldn’t differ much from the original. The price has certainly dropped, but I expected a similar scent, even if they used lower-quality ingredients. Nothing of the sort: it doesn’t resemble it at all, and the quality drops significantly due to synthetic ouds. In the original, there was a perceptible orange note at the start that blended with the florals before giving way to a resinous, animalic yet restrained, and most importantly, natural oud. In my opinion, Tempest alongside Jabir were the most original jewels of the house. Alas, this new Tempest by Xerjoff is a disaster. There is the oud, but the cypriol takes centre stage. As it dries, it resembles Promise. Regarding the oud, it is a synthetic accord like Oud Wood or Oud Silk Mood. I doubt it contains natural oud, or only in minimal doses. I believe they replaced it with amberwood. It is a poor fragrance compared to Oud Silk Mood, Promise, or Oud Wood, but coming from Kemi’s Tempest, it is a total letdown. It shouldn’t share the same name. Anyone buying this expecting Kemi’s Tempest, do not do it, for heaven’s sake. It is a typical oud plus cypriol with no personality. In the end, only a synthetic musk remains. The notes that gave life to Tempest are gone here.

Extremely difficult to describe. Imagine leather bags in a souk, spices in the distance, the scent of bare feet in sweaty babouches, horse sweat, storm-soaked esparto, wet straw, mud, and petrol. It is super animal, dark, intriguing, nocturnal, and wild; tarred yet luxurious, radiating power and distance. It leaves a massive trail. As it dries, the animal and tarred notes recede, becoming more woody and elegant, improving considerably, though it is hard to wear. In a man, it suggests someone powerful who hides something and doesn’t say everything they know. If you want to stand out among very elegant people, you won’t go unnoticed. For a woman, it would have to be an older, extremely elegant lady.

I love Tempest. In my experience with Kemi, now that Xerjoff has the K line, this is the easiest to wear. I find it very friendly, with those citrus top notes and an oud that isn’t as aggressive as its sisters, and that vetiver dry down.
