Tete-a-Tete: An '80s Woody Oriental for Men

Tete-a-Tete Eau de Cologne by Новая Заря (The New Dawn) is a woody oriental for men first released during the 1980s.

Holding an average of 3.87 out of 5 from 179 ratings, it retains a distinctive, nostalgic place in the house's line-up.

Up top there is blackcurrant, anise, mandarin, green notes and celery — a green, fruity entrance given extra bite by a vegetal anise edge.

The heart of ylang-ylang, jasmine and rose softens things with a creamy, faintly soapy floral feel, yet the composition stays masculine throughout.

Underneath, oakmoss, amber, musk, patchouli, vetiver and vanilla provide a warm, earthy and woody foundation with restrained sweetness.

Together the dominant accords are woody, earthy and musky, with green, gently spiced, fruity, mossy, amber, aniseed and sweet undertones. In eau de cologne form it feels honest and direct, true to the tastes of its time.

It should appeal to men fond of traditional mossy-green fragrances with gentle spice, and to enthusiasts keen to try the house's take on the woody oriental in its 1980s guise.

In short, a tête-à-tête with a bygone decade: fresh and green at first, mellow and warm later — one for lovers of vintage character over current fashion.

  1. It’s a dupe (90% similar) of Magie Noire by Lancome, scent-wise it’s a 10/10, its only flaw is its poor longevity (it projects for about 30 min and stays close to the skin for about 3 hours), but given its low price you can apply it freely. The masculine version comes in a splash and is about 20 USD for 100ml
