I went to Zara with a friend to test it; I wore La Bogoss and the Metal (marvellous) while he wore this and the Épice. This Parfum de Liberté smells very strong at first, with more presence than its VL sisters. It doesn’t smell bad, it’s distinct, and reminded me of Bad Boy Le Parfum. However, later, after drinking coffee, we both detected a dense, dirty cannabis scent that wouldn’t go away and was very uncomfortable. It was in a shopping centre with air conditioning. I’m not saying it’s a bad fragrance; some might enjoy it, but I’d feel insecure wearing it. My girlfriend smelled a blotter three hours later and said: ‘Don’t even think about buying that’. I’m a novice, I might be wrong, try it yourselves.
The opening is impressive: I detect very acidic grapefruit/toronja and vetiver (cannabis?). It lasts on the skin for 20 or 30 minutes. It’s a strong start, nothing artificial and very original. Then it loses strength and abruptly shifts to the DNA of the VL, staying close to the skin for 4 hours… soapy, with smoked fruits and light woods. Forget the leather or pepper. It stands out from the VL flankers for that half-hour. It reminds me of Azzaro Pour Homme Night Time. I’ve also read it resembles the Vetiver Pamplemousse from the Zara Emotions collaboration with Jo Malone.

Brutal opening: grapefruit with steroids, mature and juicy. Many people hate it, but I love it; it’s original and breaks away from the boring commercial line. A bold proposal that, as it dries down, retains the essence of the original VL.
