  1. Yesterday Velvet & Amber let me down, but today Damask Oud could not have been better. It’s woody, warm and dry, with a medicinal touch yet a near-perfect balance that I adore. At first it’s shy, almost imperceptible, but over time that shyness fades and a bold, dry, spiced oud emerges, faintly medicinal, well-reined in and balanced by pepper and papyrus, which lend it a dry character and mask its dirty side. Then rose, saffron and a hint of incense arrive, adding a more refined and elegant facet to this phase. The rose isn’t overpowering and blends exquisitely with the oud, creating a lovely floral and spicy nuance. In the dry-down it leaves smoked wood with many spicy nuances. It’s a distinguished, elegant woody fragrance I didn’t expect from this collection. Performance has been good, around seven hours on skin with a moderate trail that’s noticeable but not intrusive. Ideal for cold or mild climates and exclusively for evening wear. By the way, according to Fragrantica the collection was reformulated in 2015, so batches since then lack the potency and intensity of the original versions, and my decant is from 2016, so bear that in mind when evaluating it. A magnificent perfume, slightly pricey given current performance, but if money isn’t an issue, it’s a very beautiful scent.
