  Derby is a refined chypre leather without the classic Guerlinade, yet at the same time it has something very Guerlain. It has been one of the most pleasant olfactive surprises I have tried; it is a fragrance in perfect harmony where no note stands out or clashes. It is elegant, sober, without edges, timeless and classic—a perfume with all the credentials. I am speaking of the new version; I have not had the opportunity to try the old one. In short, it is a chypre leather that distils class everywhere. As a curiosity, it lacks the Guerlinade, that house signature formed by tonka bean, vanilla, iris and other notes present in Habit Rouge Heritage or Mouchoir de Monsieur. I recommend it for formal occasions due to its price and category. As for seasons, chypres work well in all of them; they are very adaptable. Age is subjective. I give it a ten. It is quite similar to the elegant and timeless Equipage by Hermès.

  Derby was pulled from the market some time ago, but this relaunched version from four years ago belongs to the exclusive Les Parisiens line. The original 1985 was a male chypre reference I never tried, but I also feel this one is quite chypre, even though Fragrantica classifies it as leather. On Guerlain’s official website, they define it as fougère chypre and leather. It has that typical vintage Guerlain air, but as a whole it feels timeless. It is very elegant and masculine.

  The 80s were the golden age of fashion, turning fragrance into an indispensable accessory. If the vintage Derby is an absolute classic, how does the modern version fare? In my opinion, it retains 70% of that original spirit, though logically it is deeper and denser. Guerlain has reinterpreted it for their «Les Parisiens» collection, which I greatly appreciate as I have noticed a flattening in the men’s sector lately. The bottle comes in a touch-leather box that protects the flask like a jewellery case. Very elegant and timeless, with surprising longevity and projection: 10 hours with a medium-high sillage at the start that fades gently. It justifies its official price, though with patience you can find it on discount. If you like this olfactive family, don’t think twice. The scent flows quickly into the woody after a brief, non-shocking citrus opening. Then the notable clove appears in a dense veil of noble materials until reaching the patchouli and leather that wrap everything in imposing warmth. It is an enthusiastic blend of chypre and admirable leather, giving freshness despite the spices and dark woods thanks to a revised old-school barbering touch. It is so beautiful and secure that I sometimes confuse myself about when to wear it; ideal with a suit and watch for important moments. Highly recommended if, for you, class and elegance are not just words.
