Geranium Odorata is pure geranium, very much in the Diptyque style. It’s a citrus scent that forgets about lemons and bergamot to focus on the geranium flower, whose oil is used in repellents, so it might evoke some less pleasant memories. It also emulates that green freshness found in certain roses, leaving a subtle floral base. Over time, darker and denser notes emerge: vetiver, tonka, and something akin to tobacco. This is the phase I dislike the least because it doesn’t blend well with the fresh opening; moreover, this dry-down is almost imperceptible and only becomes noticeable when it’s stuck to the skin. I cannot offer recommendations; it’s very personal: everyone decides if it’s worth the price. I bought it alongside another from the brand, used it in summer, and ultimately decided it wasn’t for me.
One thing is photo-realism, another is originality and balance. I’m an unconditional fan of the brand (not of all their perfumes or EDTs) and have eight in my collection. I discovered this one via a gifted decant. Since I was little, I remember my grandmother and mother pruning geranium cuttings in the village; the smell of damp earth from the pot and that green, citrusy, slightly metallic aroma mixed with their colourful flowers that they cared for so tenderly. This perfume transports me back to that exact moment, because the brand knows how to transport you to places and moments through the realism and naturalness of its ingredients. What happens here that leaves me doubting? That it’s simply missing something. It’s very linear yet pleasant and fresh. I agree with some previous reviews that it has a medicinal edge, but I think it’s due to a poor balance of that geranium essence, as if it lacks a note to round off the composition like other geranium scents I own that are lifetime favourites. As for longevity and projection? They could always be better and last longer on skin because it does stay on clothes and a lot, I guarantee it. On skin, it was perceptible for four or five hours if applied generously (remember it’s an EDT, let’s be fair). On clothes, all day long. If you like it, buy it; if you want to increase its longevity, a couple of sprays on clothes will give you those extra hours that are missing. However, there it depends on each person to see if it compensates (being a niche brand or whatever the cost) to use tricks to boost performance. With its flaws, I find it beautiful as a whole, not perfect, but beautiful and for those who appreciate the quality of an essence and/or have a lovely olfactory memory linked to geranium, it will surely be a hit. It’s a good perfume with geranium as the star. It smells masculine, elegant, clean and warm. But, as happens with most Diptyque, it has little strength and longevity. The brand seems to focus on well-made fragrances, with quality and elegance, but they almost never last longer than a normal designer perfume. That’s why the price isn’t worth it if you don’t mind no one noticing the scent. In this case, after two hours it’s skin-scent with undefined woods. In my opinion, Diptyque has good packaging and niche positioning, but their projection, trails and longevity disappoint despite the very good aromas. They’re more for people looking for a good perfume to then forget about it and not have the scent overwhelm them. But it seems that making a good scent that lasts is truly difficult.
It’s a very light perfume, don’t be fooled. Ideal for daily wear. The opening is floral with a medicinal touch of geranium that evolves quickly into spices, enhancing that flower even more. I love the spicy heart, very wearable in hot summers. Then on the skin it becomes sweet, making the green and floral ensemble shine more. All in all, a perfect light scent for everyday life.
Easy mix, very synthetic and doesn’t convince me. Summary: citrus with a very present, brash geranium, without nuances and poorly balanced with a soft vetiver base. It’s like those supermarket juices that claim to have orange but there’s not a trace of it. Just some poorly imitated orange aroma powder, because the geranium is the one in charge. Rating: 2
