I absolutely love oud perfumes, even if it’s a love-hate relationship. It’s like when I was a kid watching horror films: I’d snatch the remote just to see how they were dismembering the protagonist 🫣. This one opens with a punch of leather and fermented oud, the kind of ‘foul’ yet fresh and impressive scent (not unpleasant, so what exactly is ‘faecal’, ‘stinky’, ‘cheesy’?). It’s curious and overwhelming, 100% artisanal as I like it. Strong, with citrus and floral hints, but the oud and leather dominate the opening and last 3 or 4 hours without fading. Longevity: when you get bored, you take a shower.
I bought a decant after trying it in-store and it smells very much like Rasasi’s Oudh Al Boruzz Asrar Indonesia. It’s a perfume heavy on oud and leather, weighty and not simple for those unfamiliar with those notes, but a success for experts. It’s elegant and, like the Rasasi, breaks the mundane with that citrus-animalic blend. To me, it seems more elegant and nocturnal because the oud and leather are more noticeable. Perhaps it dries down differently: the Borntikoff is more woody, while the Asrar dries down citrusy and fresh. It’s very pricey for 30 ml, but if you want that scent, look for the Oudh Asrar Indonesia and you’ll have practically the same thing.
