Beloved Woman by Amouage is a floral fragrance for women. Launched in 2012, this olfactory composition was created by perfumer Bernard Ellena. The olfactory pyramid unfolds with top notes of chamomile, rose, statice, lavender, cloves, cardamom and jasmine. The heart reveals periwinkle, patchouli, benzoin, ylang-ylang, myrrh, olibanum frankincense and violet. The base is composed of algalia (civet), castoreum, leather, ambergris, musk, sandalwood, cedar and vanilla.

I absolutely love this perfume. To me, it bears a clear resemblance to Clinique’s Aromatics Elixir (which I have used for years) in its rose-patchouli accord that structures both. However, they have their differences: Beloved is softer and drier, like a slightly ethereal floral talc, whereas AE is dark, earthy, dense, and warm. Furthermore, Beloved is more luminous. That is a key difference, so they are not identical, though they do set the tone to see if you will like it. Another important difference is price and accessibility: Aromatics is very easy to find, Beloved is not so much. And in the end, Amouage does not last as long as Clinique, which ages beautifully and remains a bomb. Is it worth it? Yes, it is. How many perfumes of this style do we know today, in this current gourmand era? Not many, let’s admit it. But well, that is the price issue. Beloved is an ode to womanhood, featuring an exquisite and sophisticated blend. It opens with a bouquet of herbaceous, aromatic, and floral notes, where lavender and chamomile impart a camphoraceous freshness and delicacy. Clove and cardamom add a spicy touch that blends perfectly with the roses and jasmine, creating elegance and femininity; it then melts into a symphony of balsamic, incense-like, and animalic chords, lending it depth and mystery. The periwinkle and ylang-ylang highlight the floral opening, while benzoin, labdanum, and incense create a warm, sweet, and enveloping accord. The violets add a powdery touch that contrasts with the rest. Over time, it evolves into a base of amber, woody, and leathery notes (leather, galbanum, and castoreum), which add beauty and refinement, settling into a persistent and seductive dry-down with an unforgettable trail. On my skin, it lasts over 10 hours with moderate projection. It is a luxurious, retro, and glamorous perfume that evokes great classics but with a modern twist. Amouage has created a masterpiece that enchants and captivates. Without a doubt, it is another of my favourites from the house.
