  I’ve never tried it, but my aunt used the women’s version years ago and it was muuuy interesting – one of those perfumes almost no one knows about, destined to die young yet possessing quality and immense personality. The women’s Cabaret was a fragrance with a balsamic, resinous, opulent freshness; it sounds contradictory, but I always felt a battle between deep, earthy, slightly floral notes with an ‘spiritual’ air against a refreshing, damp, expectorant dry-down. An underrated scent with substance; wherever I smell it, I know it’s been perfumed with it… I’d love to try the men’s version.

  An interesting fragrance. More fougère than oriental, with very clean lavender and sandalwood. It sits in the same family as one of my favourites, Rive Gauche Pour Homme, but where that has anise, Cabaret has pineapple. The wear and feel for me are what I’d expect from RGPH, perhaps with a more relaxed accent in Cabaret. For lovers of modern fougères. The Art Deco-style bottle is a real gem.

  It’s basically a Drakar Noir analogue, but with more fruit and a different base. Apart from that, they’re almost identical. The fact that it’s discontinued isn’t a loss; owning both in the collection is redundant.
