Coty wrote history again with Chypre. Although the term was already in use, he gave it a fresh twist, creating accords that defined the Chypre family as we know it. He drew inspiration from the forests of his childhood, capturing that woody, resinous, mossy scent. That intense, narcotic, characterful aroma was also present in his first hit, La Rose Jacqueminot. Beyond the wood and moss, citrus is key. The style imposed by Coty dominated perfumery for decades and created a family that, while evolved, remains very much alive. Chypre inspired Mitsouko by Guerlain, Femme Rochas, Cabochard by Gres, and countless others. I like some Chypres and not others; there are interesting ones I wouldn’t wear, others that are delightful, and some that simply don’t suit me. This genre has become incredibly versatile over time, so it’s always worth trying before buying.
