Holy cow, what a find! I picked up a full, brand-new bottle at a bazaar, only 30ml. It’s a real gem: it smells like Shalimar with brushstrokes of Tabu, Royal Secret, Ungaro, Maja by Myrurgia and Ciara by Revlon. It’s an olfactory treasure. I dabbed it on my elbow and could detect all those perfumes blending together. It’s balsamic, powdery, resinous, with that sensual salve note that has won me over. I’ll definitely need to buy more of this divine relic. And watch out, at the end it leaves a trail of honey, even if it doesn’t contain any, but there it is!
A sweet and balsamic fragrance from 1921 by Francois Coty, with that floral and resinous essence of the East. It opens with orange, bergamot and lemon; the heart carries jasmine, ylang-ylang, rose and Brazilian rosewood. It’s said to have been the prototype that inspired Guerlain’s Shalimar, sparking a brand-versus-brand rivalry. It’s a little gem that transports you, like that madeleine from Proust. I have a bottle and it’s a delight: opening it makes me feel it’s 95 years old. It brings me to the Paris of Hemingway or Proust. The perfume lives in time, with its youth, maturity and age. A classic à la Suskind.
Jicky, Emeraude and Shalimar have much in common, but Emeraude and Shalimar are like twins. Emeraude is bitter-sweet, balsamic and resinous, with citrus and woods that give it complexity. It’s a special scent that can generate love or hate. Shalimar is the same but with stronger vanilla and leather notes that Emeraude lacks. Shalimar is more extravagant and ambitious; Emeraude stays softer and more linear compared to Guerlain’s. A very interesting scent.
