In 1905, Paris smelled of L’Origan, and that fragrance was etched forever into perfumery history. It’s sweet, dreamy, romantic and cheerful, capturing the Belle Époque aesthetic perfectly. The following year, its sister Après l’Onde was born; they are identical in concept and scent, except that Guerlain’s creation focuses on violet and heliotrope. Some might see it as plagiarism, but it’s natural that when a perfume becomes famous, other houses, rather than taking risks, produce similar variants to capitalise on the success. The same happened years later with Chanel No. 5; many houses copied it in some way. Chanel No. 5 is sweet, dreamy and romantic like L’Origan, but less cheerful and more melancholic. Don’t forget that Après l’Onde inspired L’Heure Bleue. Furthermore, Narcisse Noir shares ingredients such as orange, jasmine, musk, rose, neroli and sandalwood, just like L’Origan. These are small similarities we discover when comparing fragrances from the same era. L’Origan is within my favourites and can never be missing. The current version is very similar to the original, so enjoy this wonderful scent.
