Cool Water Wave by Davidoff

Second review of the Davidoff house and this time one of the Cool Water flankers, this is Davidoff Cool Water Wave Eau de Toilette. A fresh summery fragrance that opens with a citrus-herbal accord lasting no more than about half an hour, lightly retaining that salty note of its great predecessor. Afterwards, to my nose, the herbal notes prevail again leaving a clean feeling of wellbeing. Its behaviour is not outstanding, but very modest, lasting about four hours and then disappearing without a trace on both skin and clothes. The perfume is not bad, only both projection and longevity are quite weak. Typical spring and summer fragrance, preferably for morning and afternoon. I would not advise wearing it at night because of what I mentioned about its behaviour and longevity. Preferably casual wear in the mornings and afternoons in the stated seasons. In short, a fragrance for spring and summer wear both morning and afternoon, for casual use, with medium to low projection and sillage which is not unpleasant and will leave you with a clean feeling. Davidoff Cool Water Wave. A scent that is overpowering at the opening and causes nothing but dislike, it dries down and ends up disappearing in 1 hr or less, all very flat. Honestly I would neither buy it nor gift it, it is not even suitable for the gym. In Argentina it is one of the cheapest amongst the expensive ones and even so it is not worth it. It is the same as Bross London Classic which costs 5 times less. The original Cool Water is 1000 times better than this.

Starting from the fact that my nose is definitely not a sommelier’s nose, for me this Wave sits right between Invictus and Legend Spirit. Youthful, fun, and crowd-pleasing…. Pretty much everyone who smells it likes it.

This Cool Water flanker is a version that has nothing to do with the original, perhaps more youthful and summery. Where one is the sea, this one is the swimming pool. If Cool Water for me evokes that sea breeze while you’re standing on a rock with only the sound of the sea in the background, in Wave you’re sitting at a beach bar, drinking a cocktail, with laughter and jokes around. My wife particularly loves it, although I’ll always prefer the classic.

If the original Cool Water seems dreadful to me in almost every way, this Wave version is much worse, I expected this fragrance to at least be somewhat better, more pleasant and superior but it ended up being quite the opposite, this vulgarity seems to me a perfume not as aquatic nor as fresh as the normal version and what makes this Wave version even worse is that it also turns sweetish and cloying, all in all it doesn’t surprise me because many fans of the original Cool Water hardly take the Wave version into account.

Fresh, comforting fragrance, with a cold opening, of sweetish morning breeze and early summer wake-up. It starts with an aromatic citrus, accompanied by a light and fresh green juniper nuance. I perceive an aquatic aroma harmonised with a young patchouli. You could say it is an aquatic patchouli in the dry-down. Overall, it is a good fragrance, pleasant to wear from start to finish and although synthetic, it is neither sharp, heavy nor cloying, so it allows for reapplication. On my skin it has good performance. I applied it at El Corte Inglés 5 hours ago and I still feel the scent intensely. A good choice for those who like aquatic patchoulis. A very current trend for summer perfumes or hot climates. It also has good deals. Totally youthful and 100% recommendable.

(it doesn’t seem to be the typical citrus summer special edition, since this year’s Cool Water is called “Pacific”) … Right away I was surprised by a sweet opening, like melon flavour, the opposite of the bitter opening of the original. I find it woody, without mint in the leading role and with that marine aroma more muted. Maybe the sandalwood or birch it claims to have are responsible for that woody feeling, but I’m no expert in notes. As for the other “trademark” of the original fragrance, the “detergenty” touch, it’s present but also softened. It’s not the aggressive, uncompromising freshness of the original. I don’t dislike it at all, but it doesn’t convince me either. And then I wonder how it is that, with woody scents being among my favourites, this one doesn’t do much for me. Maybe because I’m a big fan and loyal to the original and I find this like a “neutered,” “sweetened” version, like a reinterpretation in line with the current fashion for sweetish perfumes… like a betrayal. I recognise lower sillage and longevity than the original don’t help either, which isn’t a marvel in those aspects either but is still superior. Maybe young people and people who generally like sweeter scents will like it and be able to appreciate it.

The new “Wave” of the old and ultra-green aquatic Cool Water. A necessary evolution away from less sharp aromatic notes toward a modern pepper with woods on a marine aquatic base, the house specialty. The opening of this Wave is centred around citrus and intense pepper, with that marine base so characteristic of the original Cool Water. I found the pepper pleasant and realistic, like its heart notes of juniper and wood; the juniper very intense. A soft sandalwood and an almost imperceptible patchouli dry down at the end. Luckily, it only brings faint reminders of the original. A fragrance for refreshing and for reapplying in the middle of a summer afternoon. Its cost is reasonable for what it offers.

Second stop for Davidoff, and this is one of the Cool Water versions: the Wave EDT. It smells fresh and summery, opening with a citrus and herbal note that lasts about half an hour, leaving a very faint salty trail. Then, for my nose, the herbs take over, leaving a clean and refreshing sensation. Its performance is modest; it lasts around four hours before fading away without leaving anything on skin or clothes. It’s not bad, but the projection and longevity are weak. Ideal for spring and summer, morning and afternoon. I wouldn’t wear it at night due to its short duration. It’s for casual use in those seasons. In short, a fragrance for spring and summer days with low-to-medium projection that doesn’t bother and leaves a clean feeling. Cheers.

It’s the same as Boss London Classic, which is five times cheaper. The Cool Water original is a thousand times better than this.

I have a 5ml decant and have tried it a couple of times. As a fresh aroma, it’s one of the best I’ve ever smelled. Very fresh, very youthful, very simple. It’s impossible for anyone not to like it. It doesn’t stand out, but I think it’s brilliant if you just want to smell good and clean. I already have it on my list of next purchases. At the same time, I have other decants: Cool Water normal, Versace Pour Homme, Citrus Cedro, Tonka Lima, Bad Boy Cobalt, and this beats them all in my taste. If it’s on offer, buy it blind; you can’t go wrong. As I said, it might not be novel, but it’s impossible not to like it. EDIT 2025: I feel that if I owned it, I’d use it a lot. 5/10 good perfume.
