I was disappointed with this 2021 version; quite fleeting on skin, cloying at first, then it dissipates like a cheap Splash. I was lucky to use the 2016 version from the Leather collection with the magenta cap and synthetic leather packaging; what a delicious scent. I own the original YSL Black Opium, and the 2016 Gardenia competed well with it in longevity and aroma, being the latter a bit more floral. I went to Zara looking for that version and found this limited edition of 200ml at the price of a 100ml one 🤪. There were also boxes of another unopened version. What a letdown; I left happy thinking I’d got double for the price of a regular one, but of low quality and a ‘fruity’ scent. If you find a different version to this 2021 one, buy it without doubt. The perfume isn’t ugly, it smells good but doesn’t have the quality of previous ones, I clarify to avoid hurting susceptibilities.
I don’t know the versions before 2020; I use this year’s and it lasts a long time, over 10 hours on skin, although it doesn’t project much, perhaps only for the first two hours, though I must give it the benefit of the doubt and use it when face masks don’t interfere. It smells lovely, not overwhelming. It’s easy to like, very sweet, vanilla-scented, and yes, I notice a hint of coffee, very subtle. It’s a good option for those who enjoy these aromas and don’t want to invest much. It won’t make you look bad, but I don’t see it as good in hot and humid climates because it could be overpowering. I’d give it a 7/10 because the price helps.
Until today, along with ‘Rich Warm’, they are my favourites from Zara. It’s a joy to try this Black Opium clone; for those who can’t afford the original or it doesn’t fit our budget, it’s the best option. Of course, it’s not the original and doesn’t have the same price, so the performance isn’t equal (the original has more longevity and intensity, less sweetness, and more darkness). BUT, quality-price-scent is a 10. As I say… ‘the 3Bs’: GOOD, BEAUTIFUL AND CHEAP.
Note: I’m reviewing the 2022 version with the rounded bottle. According to Zara, it contains gardenia, orange blossom, coffee, raspberry, and peach. This iconic Zara perfume, which has undergone reformulations, opens with a sweet fruity aroma, mainly raspberry. Immediately you feel the coffee, creamy and sweet (more like a Starbucks than an espresso), thanks to the gardenia and orange blossom. Unlike the famous Black Opium, Gardenia is linear and focuses on one facet of Black Opium: the coffee and white flower. Like Zara’s dupe perfumes, it’s very linear. It’s versatile, kind, and liked by many. It’s synthetic and, if you don’t pay attention, seems just sweet. Longevity is moderate, about 6 hours on skin, and projection is the same. I use it at home and when going out. The good thing about the new bottles is that they are refillable, less waste and cost. It’s a good option for daily wear, neither annoying nor complicated.
I find it very pleasant and wearable; it smells like nature, a cocktail of flowers with a coffee note that gives it interest. I use it daily for work and informal outings. Projection and longevity are moderate for the first two hours, then it softens. I prefer it for daytime and in temperate or warm seasons. It seems lovely for gifting, has an accessible price, and usually pleases everyone. Would I buy it again? No, because among the low-cost options there are others I like more with better longevity and projection.
A fruity floral fragrance, simple and fresh, perfect for cool days, spring, or autumn. More than bergamot, I feel it’s sweet with a fruity base, maybe pear? I don’t recognise coffee in it. Nothing sophisticated, but recommended for daily wear on routine and casual occasions. For the price, it seems quite good.
I have the 2022 edition and heard the previous one was better. I tested it last night against the original Black Opium: Black Opium on one arm, Gardenia on the other. Are they clones? Sort of. It’s a super-simplified Black Opium. It smells of coffee with a vanilla hint; if the original has ten nuances, this has one. If you want the Black Opium scent without spending on the original during the week, it’s a good option. People might mistake it unless they smell it directly on your skin. The trail and longevity are nothing like the original, but since I bought the pack with Orchid for €15 for 90ml, it’s worth it. You can shower in Gardenia and reapply as much as you like; I still love it and it’s great for not using up the other. You can tell Black Opium has better quality, but honestly, it’s brilliant for daily wear. The only drawback is that it’s ultra-mass-produced and means nothing; if you want it as a signature scent, know that many more people will be wearing it. Two out of thirty women in my workplace use it. It’s sweet but not cloying, not a sugary sweetness but a sweet vanilla. If you’re lucky and no one is wearing it around you, it’s perfect. I wouldn’t wear it in a small space like an office, but perhaps in a shopping centre or store where there’s more room. I see it as youthful and fun, ideal for dinner with friends or a date; men love it.
I have the 2022 edition and heard the previous one was better, but comparing it to my Black Opium, it feels like a simplified version. It smells like coffee with a vanilla touch; if the original has ten nuances, this has just one. It’s ideal for weekdays if you don’t want to spend on the original; they’ll get confused unless they smell it directly on your skin. I’m not sure which exact version I have, it’s square and the perfume is golden in colour. It smells casual but I don’t detect the coffee scent. A good everyday option.
I liked the notes and bought a small bottle to try. I’m glad I did because I wouldn’t buy it again. I can appreciate both expensive niche perfumes and cheap everyday ones, and this smells like a cheap supermarket cologne. Your nose gets saturated immediately and you stop smelling it. A perfume can carry synthetic notes but that doesn’t mean it’s of poor quality; in this case both things happen: synthetic and poor quality. I don’t recommend it; for just a bit more you have the Angel Schlesser, Elisabeth Arden or Adolfo Domínguez which do have good quality, even if they are everyday scents. I hope I’ve helped.
My opinion aligns quite a bit with Perfumesjuveniles: a flattened Black Opium with very low sillage and fixation. Pros: I use it without fear of wasting it due to its low price. And as BB says, the A Domínguez ones are also cheap and far superior in quality. What confirms to me is that I won’t be repurchasing this. I would repurchase AD though.
I like it a lot, it’s one of my favourites from Zara. It’s a strong scent but it doesn’t become tiring or fatiguing; I normally wear it at night but I think it would also go well during the day in cold climates. I detect plenty of vanilla and coffee. It’s an excellent low-cost option.
A good budget option for those who enjoy this type of scent. While it doesn’t have excellent performance, on my skin it lasts quite a bit, considering the Black Opium doesn’t last long on me either. I disagree with those who say it smells like cheap perfume; on the other hand, there are designer perfumes that cost a fortune and smell synthetic or have terrible performance. Only a few vintage unreformulated ones (a species in danger of extinction) and a handful of exceptions are worth their price. Otherwise, in modern perfumery, money is sadly thrown away. That’s why in some cases it’s good to have these budget options which often have better performance than the so-called ‘quality’ ones.
A good economic option for those who like these aromas. Although it doesn’t have excellent performance, on my skin it lasts quite a while, considering that Black Opium doesn’t last much on me either. I disagree with those who say it smells like cheap perfume; there are very expensive designer perfumes that smell synthetic or have terrible performance. Only some vintage un-reformulated ones (endangered species) and a few exceptions are worth the cost. Otherwise, in modern perfumery, money is thrown away. That’s why sometimes these economic options have better performance than those of ‘good quality’.
The scent is quite linear; to me it smells more of violets at first, the heart note persists like a caramel macchiato (coffee + vanilla), but as it dries down I seem to perceive an undeclared sandalwood note that reminds me of Carolina Herrera 212 Sexy rather than the Black Opium YSL (which is its declared dupe) and which I personally don’t enjoy. Nevertheless, I think it’s a fragrance of very good quality, with good longevity (6-8 hours), for those who like these notes.
Perhaps it’s just me, but the new version of this iconic perfume doesn’t even come close to the old Gardenia. It doesn’t last the same and it doesn’t smell anything like it.
I bought it in a pack with Orchid and initially thought about gifting it to my grandmother because it reminded me of La Vie Est Belle, cloying with praline. I’ve had to wear it out of necessity and I must say it’s winning me over. On my skin, it smells of rum with roasted coffee, something like an alcoholic coffee cream that I like because it’s invasive. The vanilla comforts me and makes the orange blossom less soapy than usual, more masculine, almost leaning towards lavender. It’s very linear and lasts about 3-4 hours. It’s good for everyday wear. I was pleasantly surprised.
I bought it in June and liked it in the shop, so I didn’t hesitate to take it home. However, with use, it seemed very heavy (to me, who can’t stand strong or cloying scents) and I stopped liking it. Even one day I overdid it and felt dizzy. I gifted it to a cousin who loved it without reservation. It does smell of coffee and vanilla: I perceived it as sweet in the opening and more bitter and cloying in the dry down. On the other hand, I want to highlight its longevity. In that same purchase, I also acquired Violet Blossom, Applejuice, Fields at Nightfall, and Wonder Rose. The ones with the best longevity were Gardenia and Fields at Nightfall.
I bought it in June and loved it in the shop, so I didn’t hesitate to take it home. However, with wear, it felt very heavy (I can’t stand strong or cloying scents) and I stopped liking it. One day I wore too much and felt dizzy. I gifted it to a cousin who, in contrast, adored it without reservation. It does smell of coffee and vanilla: sweet at first, then turning bitter and cloying as it dries down. On the plus side, its longevity is remarkable. In that same purchase, I also took Violet Blossom, Applejuice, Fields at Nightfall and Wonder Rose. The ones that lasted longest were Gardenia and Fields at Nightfall.
The best blind buy I’ve ever made: it lasts forever and smells of coffee with sweet vanilla, it’s exquisite!
It’s a floral and slightly fruity aroma. It has a resemblance to Black Opium, but I don’t smell the coffee anywhere, which is one of the notes I like about that perfume. The evolution tends more towards powderiness than florality. On my skin, it lasts very little, but it’s a pleasant aroma and the price is super convenient.
They just gifted it to me in a pack with Orchid. At first, it smells good, although you don’t feel many notes or nuances. The opening smells like very clean white floral, and afterwards like sweet coffee. I haven’t liked the dry-down much; it loses the scent quickly and is left with a plastic-like smell; the coffee note on me smells strange. I don’t have Black Opium, as it never caught my attention; by the name and bottle design, I thought it would be a very strong and dense scent, one of those that suffocate. In the end, thanks to dupes, I discovered this such rich aroma. The one I do have is Victorio & Lucchino Oriental Flower, and although its big drawback is that it doesn’t last long, it smells divine. It has many more notes and nuances than Gardenia, and for me the scent is undoubtedly better. It has disappointed me; when it dries, it doesn’t smell very good on my skin. If it happens to you like it does to me that you have it and it doesn’t convince you, try layering it with something sweet and vanilla-based; it seems that way it loses a bit of that plastic smell.
I love it! Very long-lasting and smells superb! If it’s similar to the YSL one, it also reminds me a bit of Miss Dior Rose n Roses! ❤️
I don’t have Black Opium, but from the times I’ve tried it, I feel that Gardenia gets quite close. For its price, it’s very good quality and a good alternative if that perfume isn’t in your budget. You mainly feel the vanilla with very sweet coffee, without losing that floral touch; it’s very rich, one of my favourite perfumes. I’ve had it for about 2 years and I feel it started to lose a bit of its aroma and smell strange; luckily I have very little left but it surprised me. I bought it along with Orchid, which didn’t happen to it; I don’t know if I made a mistake in storage, but it didn’t happen to any other. However, I’m sure I’ll buy it again when I finish it. I love it ♡.
I gave it to my mother; I liked it and she did too. It’s a marvel of a scent for the price it has at Zara. It’s totally feminine, sweet, and floral, but as for the coffee… where is it? In summary, a very pleasant perfume at a phenomenal price. An 8 out of 10.
On me, it smells very bitter with a small sweet touch that is barely noticeable. It smells of elegant femininity and has potency. If it had better projection, I would wear it in formal evening moments, as the aroma attracts quite a bit of attention.
Zara Gardenia – my personal review. The opening is floral and fresh, with a luminous combination of orange blossom, orange, and a touch of juicy peach. The result is a feminine, cheerful, and clean opening, ideal for daytime. The heart is supposed to be coffee, gardenia, and rose, but it’s not noticeable on skin. A sweet and rounded accord predominates, more gourmand than floral. The contrast of coffee and the identity of the flowers aren’t felt, which can give a sense of ‘lack of character’. In the base, vanilla is the protagonist: creamy and enveloping. Combined with praline and musk, it achieves great longevity and projection, leaving a warm and sweet trail that lasts for hours. Conclusion: it’s a feminine, sweet, and long-lasting fragrance, ideal for those seeking an accessible gourmand. Although its name promises floral with coffee, in practice it smells more like vanilla with a fresh and clean start. An interesting option if you’re looking for something economical, long-lasting, and sweet without being cloying.
Zara Gardenia – my personal opinion. The opening is floral and fresh, with a luminous blend of jasmine, orange, and a juicy peach note. The result is a feminine, cheerful, and clean opening, with a radiant feel ideal for day wear. The heart should have coffee, gardenia, and rose, but on skin it’s not noticeable. What predominates is a sweet, rounded accord, more gourmand than floral. The contrast of the coffee and the identity of the flowers aren’t perceived, which gives a sense of lack of character in this phase. In the dry down, vanilla takes the lead: creamy and enveloping. Combined with praline and musk, it achieves great longevity and projection, leaving a warm, sweet trail that lasts for hours. Conclusion: Zara Gardenia is a feminine, sweet, and long-lasting fragrance, ideal for those seeking an accessible gourmand trail. Although its name and pyramid promise something floral with coffee, in practice it smells more like vanilla with a fresh and clean start. An interesting option if you’re looking for an affordable, long-lasting, and sweet perfume that isn’t cloying.
It seems strange that Zara has diluted this bestseller until it’s a shadow of itself, as with others. Still, it’s a marvel for the price. I don’t usually like florals that are so ‘feminine’, but the Gardenia has nothing to do with the nonsense from Inditex that fades quickly. Yes, it’s a clichéd white floral and leans towards the feminine—that scent of a young girl or a retired lady (versatile, not in a bad way)—but it manages to create dissonance in a world full of identical scents. At first, it smells white and soapy, more like soft jasmine than the declared orange blossom. It’s not soap or shower gel; it’s a clean, soft touch that wraps around the atmosphere. It’s not innovative, nor is it the redundant white floral fragrance of other flankers. After 20-30 minutes, the soapy veil dissipates and coffee emerges. It’s not potent, but it adds a bitter touch in sync that makes it stand out. On my skin, that bitter note dilutes over time but remains present until the shower, in a refined and tranquil way. In its full dry-down, it smells fine (not refined), with notes of coffee and jasmine incredibly diluted yet present, inviting you to throw yourself into bed, cover yourself with the duvet, and rest. It seems the fragrance is telling you that it’s been a good day and it’s time for sleep. I also note a certain peachy touch (not a strong fruity one, but it adds consistency). As for longevity and sillage… well, that’s why I’m writing this. I went to sleep at my sister’s house and forgot my toiletry bag, so I used her gel, shampoo, cream, and perfume. I sprayed it twice at 14:15 and at 23:00 I could still smell it and it projected quite well, considering how many hours had passed. The sillage is moderate: it projects well; people will smell you when they pass by or speak to you, but it doesn’t bother or fill the space like other perfumes such as Aromatics Elixir. Good projection for 3-4 hours (on hydrated skin), then it moves to skin scent from the 5th or 6th hour. It smells good, even if it’s not a revolution. It’s stable and doesn’t do strange things. You can wear it at 20 or 60 years old, or even if you’re a man (subjective), without being judged. You can buy it, break the bottle, and put it with mikados so your house smells brilliant if you don’t want to wear it yourself. Considering that 180ml cost 17.95, I think it’s not a bad idea to take a look. P.S.: People compare it to Black Opium… well, it’s the schoolgirl cousin who doesn’t stand out, whereas YSL is the rebellious artist funded by a European university, but in that context, they are understood as similar.
It’s pretty, but it doesn’t last even an hour. I paid 8 euros, so it’s fine for unimportant days, but to be honest, it’s just a ‘meh’.
Smells like the EDT of Black Opium, but watch out: this is the ‘Over Red’ version. I wear it during the day and switch to YSL when evening falls. A solid alternative.
