  • If you’re looking for pure vanilla, you’ll be disappointed. What dominates is the lily, which is super realistic at first; then, as it sweetens, it reminds me of Baiser Vole Essence. I had hopes because I was told it was the closest to vanilla, but I understand that in the dry-down it becomes spiced, peppery, woody, and very slightly smoky… ultimately, the floral notes take over. Performance is medium-to-high, and the best part is that it doesn’t fade in intensity quickly.

Hermessence Vanille Galante is a head-to-toe fragrance, rich and substantial, completely unexpected if you’re seeking typical vanilla. It has floral notes, but they sit in the background; what truly defines it are the distinctly masculine ingredients. The vanilla is there, but it takes time to arrive. It’s accompanied by dense notes like whisky and pipe tobacco. It has a very masculine, well-formed character with real personality, as if Sean Connery were looking for a vanilla scent. Why? Because it has mystery and an overwhelming personality; it’s a gentleman’s fragrance. It suits a tweed jacket, a wool jumper, and a neatly trimmed beard perfectly. After a while, you notice that chocolate hint announcing the arrival of the vanilla, but don’t expect a sweet gourmand; it would be dark and closed, like a moonless night, yet cosy, like being at home with a drink and a gentleman of impeccable manners. It’s very special and offers no respite if you’re seeking something airy. Here, Hermès puts the full stop. Masculine to the max, yet with plenty of intrigue for a woman imagining she stole the perfume from the most handsome man at the party, who watches her all night without daring to speak, raising the temperature lightyears. Masterful, this non-archetypal vanilla.
