I tried a sample of White Aoud and, wow! A single spray filled the entire room. Montale always boasts marathon-long longevity, but here Red Aoud and Sweet Oriental Dreams are in a league of their own, even surpassing the legendary Black Aoud. The fragrance itself is predictable: creamy florals and woods, lacking much sparkle. The oud is present, yet not smoky but rather medicinal. White Aoud smells like those old insecticides from back in the day, very chemical. It has little unisex appeal; due to its floral and powdery nature, it is clearly feminine. It lives up to its name. Montale’s trick of colour-coding fragrances (Black Aoud, Red Vetiver…) is interesting as it attempts to recreate that synaesthesia of ‘smelling colours’, and it works.
This perfume starts very woody and fresh, lasting about two hours. Then, the floral notes with talc undertones take over as the oud fades, losing that strong trail. It becomes more feminine and skin-scented here. Definitely oriental and feminine; it reminds me of the Indian shops in my town when I was a child, or the floral powders my mother used to put on me. It is nothing like it seems at first, which is what I liked most. It is long-lasting, but not as it appeared: it transforms into another fragrance.

White Aoud suggests an oud wrapped in a bouquet of white flowers with a hint of vanilla. However, honestly, what I perceive most are the floral notes, with jasmine standing out. To me, it feels rather feminine. I ordered a sample a few years ago and had to leave it with my mother. Anyway, it must suit a woman much better.
It’s a good Montale perfume. At first, it didn’t say much to me; it was okay but didn’t seem like much. However, I quite like its dry-down in the end, although I must say I don’t see it as being for me. On my skin, the jasmine stands out a lot, so I see it as leaning slightly towards the feminine side. But on a woman, I think this perfume is very good. Longevity is the typical Montale: long. Projection is also the typical: exaggerated.
It’s a good Montale fragrance. At first, it didn’t speak to me; it was fine, but I didn’t think much of it. However, I’ve come to like its dry-down, though I must admit I don’t see myself wearing it. On my skin, the jasmine really comes through, making it feel a bit more feminine. But on a woman, I think it’s excellent. Longevity is the typical Montale: long-lasting. Projection is also typical: exaggerated.
