Overwhelming in the best and worst ways. I’d love to adore it, but it just isn’t for me…
An elegant, dark, smoky herbal fragrance with a boozy twist. Originally designed for the club to mask tobacco and sweat, it’s now refined and easier to wear. Intoxicating and mysterious, blending herbs, myrrh, birch, and that curry-like note from the immortelle. An olfactory journey through burnt forests; one of the most original scents in the Dior Privée collection. If you want to smell of smouldering herbs, spices, and liquor, give it a try.
A delightful blend of coffee, fennel and liquorice for me. It’s warm with a sweet edge that borders on gourmand without fully entering that territory. It’s that herbal sweetness that smells like a herbalist’s shop. Charming once the fresh air arrives, as it can be too much in summer. On my skin it evolves linearly, which isn’t a bad thing. I can’t find anything off-putting. It suits the office or formal events, for when you’re looking a little put-together. Totally unisex. It’s addictive because I keep smelling my hand and it doesn’t fade, staying present. The price is unicorn elixir, so I settled for 40ml, but a few sprays go a long way. The longevity is notable.
A delicious blend of coffee, fennel, and licorice. Warm, it skims the edge of gourmand without crossing the line, offering that herbal sweetness of a herbalist’s shop. Charming when the summer air is cool, though it can be too much. Linear development, nothing flashy. Ideal for the office or formal events, totally unisex. Addictive; you’ll be sniffing your own wrist, and it lasts a long time. Unicorn price, so I’m happy with 40ml as a few sprays go a long way. Notable longevity.
Bottled umami. The niche existed before, but Dior Homme under Hedi Slimane revolutionised it in the 00s, shifting from boring to rockstar and aspirational. Eau Noire is the legend of discontinued luxury. It is pure umami: aged cheeses, red meat, truffles. Intense for adult palates with that French touch of ‘dirty’ and powerful things. Residual acidic coffee, spices, thyme, saffron. Not gourmand, it is sexual and animalistic, distilled in an alembic. A violet vanilla base with memories of Baileys. Futurist and groundbreaking, yet retro like the Nemo from The Matrix. Divine, though today it costs a fortune and LVMH has made it complicated by selling it only in France. It deserves a try, but don’t buy it now.
Rarely has a fragrance stuck with me this whole day. What intensity! At first, it captivates and haunts you, until the magic fades and you must part ways. So intense it becomes overwhelming. It’s sweet, reminiscent of coffee, a gourmand type. It’s an aromatic bomb, sophisticated and devouring. In my opinion, it’s more for women; the chosen ones, with all due respect, didn’t click with it. Something about it, despite its quality, failed to become my signature scent. It was beautiful while it lasted, but it had to end.
Rarely is a fragrance uninterrupted on the skin all day. What intensity! You’d wish it were a loving bride clinging to you until love ends and you part ways on different roads. So intense it becomes overwhelming. Sweet aroma of gourmand coffee. Fabulous and sophisticated, yet more for women; the chosen ones didn’t quite get the ‘click’. It was beautiful while it lasted, but it had to end.
Absolutely sensational. Endless nuances of subtlety, not by quantity but by fine aromas. The pyramid deceives: lavender, coffee, and vanilla end up smelling like moka. It’s not creamy coffee; it’s dark. Coffee, leather, and cedar provide the darkness; licorice and vanilla offer a sweet counterpoint without being cloying. Thyme adds a Mediterranean spicy touch, while lavender gives an intriguing green note that some recall as curry, but it’s well-blended. Performance of over 12 hours, the best of Kurkdjian. It may be inspired by Le Male, but they are not alike.
A small jewel that smells of leather. It cost me a fortune back in the day, but there it is: unchanging and long-lasting. Better for winter.
