Leather Jardin by Zara

You can tell straight away this is a dupe of Magie Noire, it’s a green, spicy perfume with lots of civet. An Eighties perfume with witchy vibes, at first it smells strongly of rather soapy galbanum and then it turns into a blend of herbs with chilli and a touch of vintage soap. If Chanel No 19, Chanel Coco, Aramis or vintage perfumes in general are among your favourites, you’ll like this one

It opens with citrus, moves through leather and stays there. The pyramid doesn’t mention any note classed as ‘animalic’, but I notice a hint of castoreum or civet. I originally said it reminded me of Habit Rouge, because of the citrus opening and a base with a touch of leather that is overpowered by vanilla. After wearing it a few times, I realised it bears some resemblance to Jules by Christian Dior, because of the notes I mentioned: it feels as if the civet and castoreum are roaming round the neighbourhood and fighting with the neatness of the floral notes. I realise this is a bit confusing, even more so because it is tenacious in presence and projection, but at the same time, it makes wearing it fun. Regarding the other perfumes mentioned as similar (like Magie Noire, Aramis, etc.), I can say that these don’t have hesperidic notes in the opening, but focus more on leather. I think it’s suitable for formal outings, and while it’s unisex, I find it more suitable for a woman over 40 / 50.

Scent totally opposite to Zara trends, citrusy, floral and leathery but what stands out most is the smoky herbal part, it left me a bit stunned as I would never have imagined something like this could come from Zara. If you are one of those who values compliments most, steer clear, this is not it. Dark, potent, mature and very elegant, although also difficult to wear and I like that. In terms of performance it is truly insane in both longevity and projection, full marks.

From time to time Zara breaks all its marketing rules in search of bestselling perfume launches and comes out with gems like this… a true perfumery classic with a contemporary twist that makes the perfume play between the past and the present… thank you Zara for bringing this wonder back to the shelves for a third time at an excellent price.

I had the chance to try it in a Zara shop and I fell in love instantly, a fragrance with niche quality at an absurdly low price, when you apply it it gives you a bitter slap, which reminded me a bit of Guerlain Patchouli Ardent, but then it calms down, and the rose emerges with a dirty leather, and it stays like that for a long while, after a good while it turns somewhat sweet, with the animalic leather predominating, slightly sweet, but very subtle, it lasts very well for at least eight hours, which no Zara had ever given me, it’s a mature perfume that’s difficult to wear, which is what attracts me in a perfume, without a doubt a pleasant surprise coming from Zara, that if it were in a bottle from a more expensive brand I would have paid triple what it cost me.

Smells rich and lasts for ages; it’s a real luxury fragrance.

I tried it at Zara and was instantly smitten: niche-quality fragrance at a ridiculously low price. Upon application, it hits with a bitter punch reminiscent of Guerlain’s Patchouli Ardant, but then settles into a dirty leather rose that lasts for hours. Later, it turns sweet with a subtle animalic leather note, lasting at least eight hours—something no other Zara scent has ever managed. It’s a mature, hard-to-wear perfume, exactly what I like; a delightful surprise that I would have paid triple for based on the bottle and branding alone.

The listed notes can be misleading: it’s a green fragrance of a semi-classic style. I’d say it’s the Eau Sauvage by François Demachy, but in a Zara version. And it’s not bad at all, I must say.

This Zara gem arrived courtesy of Jo Malone. You can detect the citrus, rose, and leather. The opening is citrusy, but within minutes the floral notes emerge; occasionally it smells of tyres, I believe when the leather blends with the other elements. Worth it for the price because it breaks away from the standard.
