It was a disaster in the shop – boring scent with no projection – but five hours later, in the car, an exquisite vanilla emerged that I couldn’t place until I realised it was SDV. It is so refined and unique that I immediately bought the 250ml bottle again.
Super natural and soft vanilla, nothing gourmand. You can detect pink pepper at the start and cedar in the base. It isn’t boozy, but initially it smells smoky and dries down to a powdery finish. It is rich, elegant and versatile, though the performance is disappointing; I have to sniff it close to the skin to feel anything. For the price, it isn’t worth it; I prefer Cuir Beluga or Angélique Noire from L’Art & La Matière.
I thought vanilla wasn’t the star and I was wrong. It is possibly the best vanilla I have ever tried, the most delicate. It opens with a smoky, dark touch, very fine and unobtrusive. Gradually it becomes woody and resinous, with a powdery sensation in the air. It is beautiful, comforting and addictive, although its trail is discreet and the longevity is just adequate. I like it for home, perhaps not for outside as it feels a bit feminine. Ideal for cold nights.
This is a marvel, my favourite from the L’Art & La Matière collection. Overflowing with vanilla, the opening is spicy and smoky, as if smelling a vanilla bean drying in the sun of Madagascar. It is a green vanilla, not a pastry one. Exquisite and very rounded.
It is a rich perfume with a vanilla that doesn’t cloy. I love sweet things, but here it is well balanced and leaves a powdery trail. I am surprised it doesn’t have iris, because I really detect it. It isn’t what I would wear most, but I found it quite good.
It is the most special vanilla I have tried, with frankincense and a peppery touch. It lasts a long time, is very pleasant, elegant and I see it as unisex. A delight.
Delicious vanilla; I love Guerlain’s. It has a boozy note (though not listed) and dries down powdery. I love it and besides, I receive compliments when I wear it.
It is a delicious vanilla; I adore Guerlain’s vanillas, something liquorised (though not listed in the notes) and talc-like as it dries. I love it, and besides, I receive compliments whenever I wear it.
Truly, the best gourmand perfume you could wear: it doesn’t cloy, smells like freshly baked vanilla, it isn’t heavy or dizzying. It is the best I have ever tried.
If Spiritueuse Double Vanille isn’t ranked among the best vanilla perfumes, I’d question that list entirely. The first time I tried it was a few years ago in Paris: it was love at first sniff, and without knowing anything about fragrances, it left me speechless. The second time was last year when we were gifted several samples from Guerlain’s private line, and once again, it left me utterly enchanted. Upon wearing it, I forget the world and all its troubles; for me, it is a spiritual journey. SDV opens with a rum-like accord and a creamy vanilla that is already prominent. The pink pepper is noticeable, giving a pleasant tingle. Soon, the incense begins to burn over the warm cedar wood; it is never overwhelming and blends with the vanilla in the finest accord I have ever heard. I can’t quite detect the floral notes, but the benzoin sweetens the fragrance just enough, while a deep intoxication washes over everything, creating something truly addictive. It is warm, deep, sensual, elegant, sophisticated, and yet very delicate. It is unisex because it isn’t overly sweet. The longevity is moderate and the sillage rather low. I was also gifted Cologne of Missions by Le Couvent. They are not at all the same, yet they share certain nuances (Couvent is sweeter and more alcoholic, less woody and smoky, certainly); still, the olfactory experience I get is not remotely similar. But considering the exorbitant price, I think I can manage to do without SDV for a little while longer, even though I know it is my perfect vanilla.
If Spiritueuse Double Vanille doesn’t appear in a vanilla ranking, I would be suspicious. I tried it in Paris and it was love at first sight; it left me speechless. The second time, with samples from the private line, it enchanted me again. I forget the world; it is a spiritual journey. It has a boozy finish like rum with creamy vanilla, pink pepper that tickles, frankincense burning over warm cedar and benzoin that sweetens. It is warm, deep, sensual, elegant and delicate. Unisex as it isn’t overly sweet. Longevity is moderate and the trail is low. I have been gifted Cologne of Missions by Le Couvent; they aren’t the same but share nuances (Couvent is sweeter and more alcoholic). Despite the outrageous price, I think I can live without SDV for a while longer, although I know it is my perfect vanilla.
It is a luxury vanilla shake, one of the best gourmands I have tried. Unisex, slightly more feminine. Very warm, sweet and well constructed, for cold climates. It lasts at least 10 hours. If you like commercial vanillas, come and try this: it is the queen of them all. Warning: once you smell this, your olfactory memory will level up and every time you smell a commercial vanilla again, it is likely you won’t like it anymore.
Perfect for winter. Projects a lot without being heavy, and the longevity is brutal. It’s a blend of spices, smoke, and vanilla glaze; it smells like pure gourmand, akin to a burnt vanilla candle.
Well, my story is dramatic; I read how fantastic it was here and, as a friend gifted it to me (what a bargain), a fabulous package with samples arrived. I sprayed it and thought: where is the magic scent? This smells cheap or something. Wait, it changes, okay, now I’m in heaven. What a letdown. I tucked it away in its lovely box, making sure it was Spiritueuse and not another by mistake. We had an anniversary party, I went to the shower, got ready thinking about my mistake and the expense, and right then I understood it. On my forearm was the MAGIC. It’s literally a DREAM. I’m not usually one to finish perfumes quickly, but this one ran out in half a year and still lingers on my coats. I think I’ll need to buy it again.
Good, mine is a bomb. It arrived beautifully with samples, but at first I thought: where’s the magic? This smells cheap. Wait, it changes… now I’m in church. What a letdown. I keep it in its lovely box, making sure it’s Spiritueuse and not another mistake. We had an anniversary party, I went to the shower, got ready thinking about my error and the expense, and right then I understood it. On my inner arm was the MAGIC. It’s literally a dream. I’m not usually one to finish perfumes quickly, but this one did, and it lasts a lifetime. It finished halfway through the year but still smells on my coats. Right, I think I need another one.
Just when I thought nothing could surprise me more, one appears that leaves me speechless. Guerlain’s Spiritueuse Double Vanille is a masterpiece. If it were a painting, it would be Monet’s Japanese Bridge: visible to all, yet with hidden magic. It’s complex, yet seems simple with that crisp, clean vanilla, but there’s so much behind it. It’s sweet without being cloying, with waves of incense, a breeze of benzoin, elegant cedar, and citrus and spicy touches. Guerlain dominates vanilla with this; elegant and ethereal, with the delicacy of a flower and the strength of its thorns. I bow before this work and am glad to know these diamonds still exist.
Just when I thought nothing could surprise me more, one appeared that left me speechless and blinded my senses. Today Guerlain’s Spiritueuse Double Vanille did exactly that. If I compare it to a painting, it’s Monet’s ‘The Japanese Bridge’: it lays its beauty bare, visible to all, yet keeps within its essence the magic that bewitches you and won’t let go. It’s the most complex surprise I’ve ever smelled; it seems simple with that crisp, real vanilla, but there’s so much more behind it. It’s more than just vanilla; it has a masterful balance that isn’t cloying. You feel waves of fine incense, a breeze of benzoin, elegant cedar with citrus and spices, but there’s more that my nose can’t decipher, leaving me crazy trying to understand what intrigues me so much. Guerlain asserts itself as the house that handles vanilla like no other, and SDV embodies that subtle, ethereal elegance, with the delicacy of a flower and the strength of its thorns. I bow before this perfumery masterpiece and am glad to know these diamonds still exist, even if they are hard to find.
To clarify, it’s with a pinch, like a splash, and yet I’m still smelling it after more than 12 hours. It’s another cold experience with expensive perfumes. It smells like custard vanilla, that spicy and peppery scent that sometimes tires me, but here it has nuances. It doesn’t smell flat or like the famous reviews or Ambre Narguile. It reminds me more of Cologne of the Missions by Le Couvent des Minimes, one of the best in price-to-quality ratio. It has a pleasant, original floral-balsamic tone, with a touch of dark, slightly spicy bean. The name ‘Double’ comes to unite industrial vanilla and bean. Although it doesn’t overlap with Eau des Missions, the price difference makes one think. The Guerlain seems to perform much better.
Sweet scent, very long-lasting, vanilla at its finest. Excellent fixative.
Mixes brilliantly with other fragrances, giving them an insane longevity and immense depth. Its composition is top-tier for blending. My go-to pairing is with Gourmand Coquin; together they form a duet that never fails.
It caught me off guard, not because of quality, but because of how it smells on my skin. It’s a sensational, super sensual and comforting scent. I had a spray sprayed on my wrist while heading to pick up Gourmand Coquin and didn’t pay attention, as I’m loyal to the Tihota vanilla and thought nothing would surprise me. I was wrong. I left delighted with my Gourmand Coquin refill in its scented bag, when another passionate scent started to emerge that wasn’t my usual treasure. Then I remembered the spray and, without getting too close, I knew: Spiritueuse Double Vanille. It’s a rich, boozy vanilla with smoky notes and perhaps tobacco. It proves that sweet can be sophisticated, daring, mischievous and masterful. Impeccable composition. Brilliant, sensual, deep, complex, I love it. A fantastic fragrance I bought again the very next day.
