Perfumes bring back memories, people and places. Sometimes the brand name means nothing, as with ‘Oud Wood’ or ‘Y, Bleu’, but with Épices Volées from Guerlain, it’s different. It’s a jewel of their ‘L’Art et la Matière’ collection. It reminds me of sculpture, like when you chip away excess marble to reveal the figure. Here, the spices are what has been stolen, not golden apples, but coriander seeds, cardamom and cloves from the Garden of the Hesperides. They blend with rose and patchouli: earthy, sweet and dry. There’s a white wood base that returns to the cardamom, creating a circle. It smells soapy yet rough, a contrast. It doesn’t follow a straight line but repeats like a canon. It’s meant to be enjoyed on your skin without projecting much, as if recovering an ancient scent. It lingers on the skin all day, slowly and silently, like ships setting sail from Ithaca. The spices are fine and delicate, brought by Guerlain as if you were walking through the Louvre seeing the tired Hercules Farnese after completing his impossible tasks.
