Floral and incredibly delicate, Innocence felt far from the powdery, hazy vibe I’d expected; instead, it evoked a cloudy September or April day in a Devonshire English manor, where a curtain parts and a teenage girl vanishes, caught spying on the adults. That was exactly what came to mind when I tried it. Not identical, yet it shared with Jesús del Pozo’s Halloween that misty nature with flashes of floral sweetness. Some bottles truly create synesthesia with their contents, and this was one of them: just by looking at it, you knew how it smelled – of innocence, youth, something pure and virginal, a blend of ice blue, sea green, and lavender. Like its era, the bottle varied by size, much like Shiseido’s Feminité du Bois or Cacharel’s Gloria line. Perhaps Innocence wasn’t anything groundbreaking and my memory has mythologised it, but it’s fascinating to note that twenty years ago, youth launches were for girls just starting to live, whereas today any fragrance, whether for a mature woman or a teenager, is hypersexualised from the marketing down to the scent itself.

This bottle performed an incredible exercise in synesthesia: just by seeing it, you knew how it smelled – of innocence, youth, something pure and virginal, a mix of ice blue, sea green, and lavender. Like its time, the bottle varied according to size, just like Shiseido’s Feminité du Bois or Cacharel’s Gloria line. Perhaps Innocence wasn’t anything extraordinary and my memory has mythologised it, but it’s curious to realise that twenty years ago, youth launches were aimed at girls just starting to live, while today any new fragrance, whether for a mature woman or a teenager, is hypersexualised from the communication down to the aroma.
