Deep Red by Hugo Boss

Ambered sandalwood, floral and sweet with a woody touch that isn’t quite so youthful; it smells distinguished. It’s very versatile and I see it as ideal for cooler moments.

This perfume screams cherry and raspberry! On my skin, they dominate for most of the time. It’s warm but doesn’t last as long as I’d like. I have another Hugo Woman Extreme and I sense a similar base, like the house signature, but it’s not the same because this one is herbal. I bought it blind based on the notes and loved it. I consider it sweet but not gourmand, not unisex, a bit citrusy and with personality. I’m very open with scents, I have one for every mood and I don’t have a signature perfume.

It doesn’t seem like a citrus perfume at all. You can tell there’s orange, yes, but it’s a ripe, juicy orange, very sweet, loaded with vanilla and sandalwood; more like a dessert than fresh fruit. It’s woody/vanillic with a touch of fruity/floral (creamy white flowers, I suppose neroli) and a hint of spice in the opening from the ginger, though it’s not sharp or persistent. It’s lovely and doesn’t need to last 24 hours or project a hundred metres to shine. It invites people to come closer without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of perfume I use when autumn shows its claws: it wraps you just enough on days with dwindling daylight and the sun struggling against the clouds. It makes itself felt without suffocating. Longevity is more than acceptable if you apply the relevant sprays (two aren’t enough): about 6 hours and moderate sillage. I sense it in bursts and know it’s perceived without being invasive; I’ve received positive comments. Although I believe all perfumes are unisex, if standards must be considered, it’s more feminine due to that floral/fruity charge and the accompanying vanilla. I wouldn’t use it in summer; its ideal season is autumn and winter. As it’s not invasive it’s versatile, though it wouldn’t be my first choice in very formal circumstances. For daily, day and night, and semi-formal occasions it works very well. In Spain it’s easy to find for around €30 for 90ml, an economical option to consider.

This perfume is like diving into an orange grove, with its citrus freshness that envelops all the senses. It’s the perfect choice for early mornings, especially when I’m getting ready to go to work. However, its ephemeral longevity is a disappointment.

It was a blind buy and I loved it, just like my mum who ended up using it. She says she always receives many compliments, so I think it will be her signature perfume for a good while.

It has shifted from an autumn-winter scent to a spring-summer one, which is rare but that is how I feel. Perhaps the intensity has been reduced following a reformulation, yet I remain delighted. I believe it is no longer manufactured, although I can still find it in physical stores and online at very good prices.

What a shame I didn’t try the original. I have the reformulated version, and my only complaint is the longevity, which is lamentable like other Boss perfumes I own. The scent, however, is lovely and rich. I understand it was a hit in its day. The name seems to describe it well: it smells red, bold, sweet, juicy fruity with woods and a powdery touch. A pity about the longevity, as the scent is very good, but it should be more affordable given its performance.

I haven’t tried the new version, but I was loyal to the original for a long time. If anyone is looking for it, I encourage them to try Libre Le Parfum. Once it settles on the skin, Le Parfum smells exactly like Deep Red.

When it first hit the market, wow!, it was a huge success, but it has since been reformulated and is no longer as potent. That’s why you can now find it for €20 on the high street. The fixative is what makes a fragrance last; it’s the most expensive raw material in a perfume. So, when the price drops, it’s because the formula has changed.

I smelled this fragrance on a friend during a trip to the beach: I recall a honeyed, woody, and super-sensual scent that I adored. Some time later, I found it online at an incredible price and decided to buy it, oh, what a disappointment! It didn’t smell anything like what I smelled on my friend. I detect neroli and spices, and as time passes, a bit of sweet, loud vanilla, but no trace of that sophisticated, sexy vanilla I remembered. Could it have been the beach heat, or did I buy a different or fake version? While I don’t hate it or find it repulsive, it reminds me of catalogue perfumes without a joke or personality, a cheap aroma you find anywhere. I use it to stay at home doing nothing or when taking a shower before bed, nothing special.

I bought it blindly on the recommendation of friends and because it was in my old-school phase. It has a very pleasant fragrance, it’s rich, easy to wear, not soft but not strong either, and the blend of notes is perfect. At first it’s a sweet citrus, then the vanilla takes centre stage on my skin. The pity is the short longevity and weak trail. I would recommend it; people with a less strong pH than mine will surely get better results. In my opinion, it can be bought blindly.

I’ve worn it almost non-stop since 2003 (with three nine-month breaks during pregnancies to avoid altering my hormonal perception), and I don’t think it was reformulated. Perhaps they reduced the intensity, but maybe I’ve just got used to it after so many years. The scent is delicious; I always thought it smelled of bubblegum, but when I smell real bubblegum it doesn’t, for some reason my mind configures it that way and I love it; I haven’t heard anything like it. Now with more experience I detect the orange, tangerine, neroli, pear and vanilla. At one point it went out of stock and I searched for something similar without success. Finally, I ordered it from the USA. It’s my signature scent.

This perfume has no comparison with any other; it’s unique! Mysterious, sensual, attractive, sexy, provocative and welcoming. A HB gem that’s unfortunately hard to come by in Mexico.

Years ago when they launched it for me it was the bomb, I loved it and it lasted a long time. Recently I bought it again…and nothing, nothing like before. It still smells good…but not like before and it doesn’t last at all. Anyway, a pity, but I won’t repurchase.

This fragrance has a citrus opening that might seem unisex; after one or two hours it transforms into a very delicate vanilla that is only perceptible at close range. At least its performance on my skin is three to four hours in total. People comment that it has been reformulated, probably that’s why it has lost quality in terms of longevity and trail. It smells very well but it’s a pity it lasts so little on the skin.
