U by Adolfo Dominguez for men opens soft and discreet. As it develops, it releases that typical musky, aquatic, generic supermarket cologne scent that goes unnoticed at first but becomes acceptable over time. It begins with a citrus blend of bergamot and grapefruit, with a slightly rough, skin-like touch, as grapefruit can be hard to digest at first glance, unlike orange or lemon. If you add a green apple as the star note and the classic marine note of calone, you get that typical early 2000s aroma. It’s an oxygenated, aquatic combination that, to be honest, gives me a bit of a stomach ache. It’s not ugly, but it doesn’t quite match my tastes. On the plus side, it has incredible longevity for an aquatic scent. Its trail is moderate but present. I believe it carries Iso E-Super, which isn’t the dominant note as it is in a Terre d’Hermès or an Encre Noir, but it intensifies the ozonic and aquatic notes to make them last longer. The white musk, with a touch of sandalwood and a hint of eucalyptus-mint camphor, wraps around from start to finish. I recognise that everything is blended very well and offers a fairly rounded product, similar to a Bleu de Chanel or a Sauvage by Dior, although those have more complexity. The quality-price ratio is magnificent and it’s highly recommended for lovers of the aquatic-musky family. It’s relaxing, clean, fresh, optimistic and very wearable in heat. What a shame it’s been discontinued, as it occupies a niche that is rarely seen nowadays.

U by Adolfo Domínguez is a fruity floral fragrance for women. Launched in 2001, this composition was created by perfumer Ramon Monegal. The top notes unfold with bergamot, raspberry, blackcurrant and mandarin; the heart reveals rose, valley lily, freesia and magnolia; while the base notes settle on sandalwood, patchouli and Virginia cedar.

A friend gifted it to me and chose it because it smells brilliant. I wear it in spring, autumn and summer evenings. It’s perfect for young people aged 18 to 25.
